Tips and Tricks to Running a Con Game

X-card for audience members, no. IMO, audience members that are bothered by content at a table they are watching should just move on. If I as GM can't ask the x-card playing player what the problem is, how am I supposed to modify things in an acceptable direction, in a noisy room, under time...

US Tariffs: $80-$200 Surcharge On All Packages Regardless of Price

Unfortunately, making you put something in a cart to see the price is a somewhat common practice. Some stores will hide behind a "The MFG makes us do this, for reasons" excuse but I really think the stores believe you are more likely to purchase something if you put it in a cart. Its already...

Tips and Tricks to Running a Con Game

Comment on 'Safety Tools' aka X-Card etc. Such a thing is nice for a casual game at your local FLGS or your house. It becomes far more complicated at a con. People can have over $1000 invested in sitting at your con game table. I have been surprised several times at how far some folks will...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

I think we are being railroaded into a thread supposedly about railroading by stating there is no definition for railroading. As far as the riot in town thing, if the GM really wants the party to be involved with the riot, create a positive inducement. A guard offering a "10GP reward for all...

Tips and Tricks to Running a Con Game

This is from experience running many Star Fleet Battles scenarios years ago but much should be useful for RPGs. 1. Verify from the con folks when/where your table is. Do it early. Do it multiple times. More then once, our table(s) were moved or 'accidentally' dropped from the schedule due to...

    SkyNet really is ... here?

Not really a new thing. Folks will often read a computer printout or something on a screen and assume it is correct. "Because computers don't make mistakes." The computer becomes a type of authority figure. AI will probably make this tendency worse because it will seem 'friendly.'

D&D General The ph icon characters

One possible scenario: Generations ago, Lidda's ancestors were forced off their land because <fill in the blank reason>. The had to travel so for that they lost the way back BUT knowledge of certain symbols were retained and passed down by tattoo. Members of LIdda's people are always on the...

Pathfinder 1E In Pathfinder 1e, do half-elves and half-orcs get the human bonus feat by virtue of being half-human?

From PF1 Core Rulebook p 24 on Half-elves: Elf Blood: Half Elves count as both elf and human for any effect related to race. Entry under Half Orc is the same except sub Orc for Elf. But this may be what got argued in a past game to justify a bonus feat. But in all PF1 games I have been in, only...

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

<Snicker>. They since changed the rules but I saw a 1200+ point Romulan fleet taken out by a pair of Orion PFs carrying 4 NSMs(Nuclear Space Mines). The PFs screamed in engines doubled and dropped the NSMs right off the nose of a cruiser. The 4 mines blew, the undamaged cruiser blew, the...

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

The already mentioned Star Fleet Battles was influenced by being limited to the IP in ST-TOS and the animated episodes. Anything after that is forbidden. And by becoming popular while the Cold War was still very much a thing. A lot of the carrier combat stuff in SFB is a proxy for US vs USSR...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

I have seen many a photo and drawing of non-European cultures where that was pretty much the normal dress style. Lots of kids have perused National Geographic magazines over the years for the naked natives photos. Not everyone wears heavy armor for combat.

    Kickstarter: GURPS Mission X

Thanks for the bump. Now on my list of watched coming KS. Always amazed at how many folks claim GURPS is complex as they sit down with 10+ books for their next PF/D&D game so they can sort through 50+ races/species/ancestries, 100+ classes/subclasses , several hundred feats, and skills that...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

Given the expressions on faces, I think we are about to answer the question, Can a Bard/Barbarian rage while performing? I think that person under the table may be about to get a face full of Improvised Weapon - High Heel while the dancer performs the Dance of Raging Death.

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

The tendency to go from simple to complex. D&D started as three 5x7 books in a box. Traveller started as three 5x7 books in a box. Most of us know that both games are now many books of 100+ pages each. Star Fleet Battles started as one 5x7 book in a bag. The latest rule book for SFB is 466...

D&D General The ph icon characters

When there were 10 or less 'classic' classes, iconic characters made sense. Players knew who/what they were and the iconics could be used to identify something. Now that there are a whole horde of classes, subclasses, options and whatnot, iconics lost much of their utility. Not that many...

D&D 3.x Mike Selinker about the release of 3.0 D&D

That day, no. Doing good to remember lunch yesterday. But I still have a link to a gaming blog where we started a game on Sept 14, 2005 so it seems the group adopted it fairly quickly. May have taken that long before someone was confident enough to try running and for us to wrap up whatever...

Pathfinder 2E Looking for advice as a GM new to PF2e

Consider buying the Beginners Box. Between the Player's Reference Card(PRC) and the last two pages of the Game Master's Guide, you have probably 80% of what you need to know to play PF2 after the players get their characters setup. Provide copies of the PRC to each player and yourself.

Creating some form of address courtesy titles for lowest nobility, and question about addressing strangers of unknown rank

Milord/Milady might work. An honorific that is used when the speaker doesn't know who is being addressed. Also used for untitled nobles and offspring where Lord/Lady is inappropriate. It would be incumbent on the addressed to politely correct the speaker if desired.

Interested in checking out non-D&D fantasy "old school" ttrpgs

Melee is available as a free download from Warehouse23, the Steve Jackson Games online store. As mentioned above, it is a subset of Fantasy Trip but for the price, a good way to give it a try. If nothing else, you wind up with a free quick to play combat game.

    Worlds of Design: Only Human

Why humans? D&D probably wouldn't have sold well if the main pitch of the game was "Buy this game and pretend to be an Orc..." Once the game was established, players wanted to try different things and the publishers obliged. But even then, it is far easier to imagine a Human centric world as...
