    Vancian Magic in Chrono Cross

Doesn't mesh with popular conceptions on how magic "really" works. I love it, though, and wouldn't have it any other way (except maybe even more Vancian, with really extravagant names).

D&D 4E What will happen if 4E doesn't use the OGL?

Yeah, quite likely. Why not Mongoose? I know they have retreated a bit from d20, but they have the capacity to return any time, and probably do it faster than others and be distributed in the book trade.

Will Levels be taken out and shot?

No. Levels and hit points work, and are perfectly familiar - comfortable to anyone who has played a CRPG/MMORPG. Resistance to levels usually comes from a segment of tabletop roleplayers, while the rest of the world doesn't mind them. Now Vancian magic - that will be deader than a very dead...

    1e vs. 2e:

There is currently an ongoing thread on Dragonsfoot where posters are warring over whose Basic edition's artwork is legitimately old school and which is not. Enoy: http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23031

Keep on the Borderland ... how long does it take?

My KotB one-shot went something like this: the PCs explored the Keep, gathered information and tips on possible adventures. Thereafter, they started to look for the bandits in the wilderness. Unfortunately for them, they run into the spider lair, where two were immediately killed by poison. The...

Wait, so 7/8/9th level spells weren't in OD&D?

Yes. I have had only one campaign go above that, with a single PC reaching 14th level, after which he became a god and the whole group was retired. I always viewed 10th+ level PCs as extremely powerful beings - like Heracles or Achilles, whom I'd stat as 15th and 12th level fighters...

Pathfinder 1E [Paizo Publishing] Introducing Planet Stories: Classic Science Fantasy Novels

You, Sir, are a man of good taste & distinction, and I wish you the best in your endeavours. (BTW, my favourite Eric John Stark story, and probably my favourite fantasy novel, is The Book of Skaith. If you aren't familiar with it, check it out one day. It's good.)

Wait, so 7/8/9th level spells weren't in OD&D?

Yup. As an encouraging note, I have also removed all spells above 5th level from my campaigns (except a select few which I demoted to 5th), and it works like a charm. After all, with 5th level magic, you can, raise the dead, kill someone by pointing a finger, travel to any point of the campaign...

Big things are developing. Stay tuned.

    That was my first thought.

How much combat features/d in your AD&D (1e) games?

Less than today, for some reason (not being able to afford a monster book might have played a role). I also became a lot more bloodthirsty as a DM over the years.

    Best of Necromancer?

If you need to buy one Necromancer product, buy The Tomb of Abysthor. It is the single best d20 adventure I own - a dungeon that reads well, plays better, and does just about everything right. Seriously, it is a great, great product.

Have fantasy novels gotten "better" since D&D?

I actually like it a lot more than LotR. It has less pathos but more characterisation.

    The problem with D&D

So play something else, probably? :uhoh:

Have fantasy novels gotten "better" since D&D?

NO. Heavens, no. If anything, D&D's literary heritage seems to be genreification, stagnation and self referential fantasy without the freshness and originality of works like Dream-Quest for Unknown Kadath or Dwellers in the Mirage. And that's without going into the extensive D&D novel family, of...

    Failed Game?

I would say Basic Editions released in the 2e era after the Rules Cyclopedia failed, as you very rarely see someone who had picked up gaming with them. It is not like TSR didn't try, either - there was a bigass box, a box with pewter Ral Partha figurines, a set with CD-tracks... they just failed...

    who else loves the C&C...?

Maybe I didn't mention "with released products"? Seriously, I know about it and hope to get the products once released. But I am also about the general principle. Small, inexpensible, done with love and COOL. Thse are the products I want.

    who else loves the C&C...?

A sort of fairy tales infused fantasy... no, that's not right... say, something very 1e, but not the earliest (White Plume Mountain, Tomb of Horrors, Giants Series) kind, rather something later - maybe Mystara? It is very hard to put on paper (err, bytes). It is mossy forests, trolls, goblins...

Dungeon Crawl Classics - like 'em?

There were some I liked a lot, and some I found downright dreadful. Fortunately - and this, I think, is a strength of the DCC business model, in contrast to the superior but less well marketed Necromancer modules - the investment is low enough not to feel cheated if you get one of the weaker...

    who else loves the C&C...?

I am in complete agreement. The boxed set is also an ideal basis for house ruling, whether adding subsystems from oter D&D versions, different games or of your own design. For a reason, the "small press feel" gives it an air of authenticity inviting tinkering - and God knows I have done my share...
