Sneak attack does not work with spells. Anyone who wants it to work with Toll of the Dead, Dancing Lights, or intense glares, go ahead. I think the OP was asking if the rules as written allow it.

About 100 percent of the players I've played with don't care about that .5 damage difference. They choose what they want to use because they think it looks cooler.

A lot of casual players want a simple choice because they don't want to be overwhelmed with too many options. Also, a lot of players don't need mechanics to make their characters interesting or to have fun.

Can they disengage and then move away?

I've always felt that these types of falls that don't kill would be like Batman type of falls. Where they use walls, ledges, trees,.etc. to slow their fall. Now if a player says they are going to belly flop off a skyscraper, I just warn them beforehand that they will just be dead.

As would any sane ruling. Trying to use the spell as a trap detector is very rules-lawyery-munchkin imo.

It would be a horrible feeling to get one-shotted by some lucky orc with a bow when you are high level and have invested a lot of time in a character. A hit points ARE meat system could very well have stuff like that happen 5 percent of the time. Maybe someone has a good system out there that...

Yeah I guess I just think casters have enough goodies in general and don't need the playing field levelled for them. Try it out for your players and share how it works out.

It's not a damage thing that might be OP. It's giving casters the option to basically auto hit on spent spell slots. Basically every caster will take and use this cantrip every time they can. I think a higher level spell that granted advantage or something on the next spell attack...or using...

I think having prof, expertise, adv to Strength rolls and perhaps greater carrying capacity does make you "stronger". Just not in combat or DPR. Some Goliath character would still be allowed to add their plus 2 to Strength.

Could they do things 0ther than straight stay bonuses? Like proficiency/expertise in Athletics, Strength saving throws. Advantage on Strength checks? Stuff that can't be directly tied to DPR

Why should a business devote money and resources to such a small niche market rehashing game designs that already exist? When their more recent inventions are generating huge revenues and actually reaching the mainstream and demographics that have never been reached before? So some DnD players...

I think part of the problem is that certain people feel a sense of ownership of the game. Sort of a pride to be a player of a game that the general public disdained. Now that "everyone is against us" attitude has little bearing because of the success of 5e. So ppl like pundey will cry...

I wouldn't place too much importance on some tweet. My group has old players and new. There is no cultural divide unless someone wants to be painted as a victim.

I don't think the Dewey thing applies to DnDBeyond statistics. Any argument that DnDBeyond is generally representative of the player base also freely acknowledges that it is not a perfect representation with no margin for error.
