D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

Just cuz it says "inherently evil" does not mean you automatically switch alignments or anything. There's no mechanics around it because the designers probably want to actually give games the opportunity for nuance and even ambiguity. It's the rules-lawyery type of arguments here on this...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

Just agree to disagree here. No one gonna convince anyone anyways. While I think druid metal is a rule, there is a significant amount of ppl who think otherwise - so I get it that there is ambiguity and accept other positions. Unless we play at each other's tables , it doesn't really matter.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

This whole thread is interesting and the morally ambiguous nature of these things can enhance the game. My Neutral half orc rogue had no moral problems taking and using a "night whistle" which allows her to cast Animate Dead. The Good mage and priest didn't want to touch that thing since their...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I'm waiting for the arguments on what "frequently" entails. Maybe 5E just doesn't provide enough rules guidance to fit everyone's tastes.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

If DM that way, then no one here's gonna complain. Personally, I wouldn't want a huge rule book in a role playing game. I think those things are better left to DM freedom. Even the rules for Animate Dead can be cumbersome. For example, there would have to be huge list of context and...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

Are you arguing that there are no mechanics for stuff like this? There's also no mechanics for killing kids in the game either. Such characters are still evil. This is an argument about almost nothing at this point.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I figured the zombie was "under the control" of the caster.. like a drone. So caster doesn't have to worry about the corruption?

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

Saying it's inherently evil is different from ends justifies means. Yeah it's an evil act. But "never let morals get in your way of doing the right thing". Or something like that (Salvor Hardin) Creating zombies to help unclutter the garage? Sort of evil. But who cares...be an evil wizard...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I don't think this is accurate. When you animate a chair, you don't create an evil chair that will kill innocents after the spell ends.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

It depends. Reckless use of nuclear power can definitely be considered evil. Nuke meltdowns are bad. Energy doesn't have an alignment though. Skeletons and zombies do.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I think creating an evil creature that would attack and kill innocent living things if left uncontrolled should be considered generally evil. Doesn't the spell only last 24 hours? And the the zombie or skeleton sort of wanders off? So if you just let the thing go, there's probably a good...

D&D General What class is Gandalf?

Tolkien wasn't thinking DnD when he made him up. So no good match?

D&D 5E (2014) How does that Fighter, Barbarian or Rogue become king? Bring on the Feat

It seems to me that characters that are min-maxed for combat sometimes don't actually fit the the mental image the player has. As a DM, I would allow the player the reshuffle their stats, and maybe even skills or feats, at some point as some sort of downtime activity. Particularly if the...

D&D 5E (2014) How does that Fighter, Barbarian or Rogue become king? Bring on the Feat

They're not supposed to be as mechanically good as the Bard, etc. at Persuasion. Now if the DM is going to rule that mechanics mean everything, well that should be established at session zero. You would make it clear that the 1st level wandering Bard with 16 CHA basically has more sway than...

D&D 5E (2014) How does that Fighter, Barbarian or Rogue become king? Bring on the Feat

What keeps anyone from putting a 10s and 12s in mental stats? Two 10s and a 12 is nothing to sneeze at. The reason for point buy and ASI is to give players the chance to shape their own stats. Now if a player wants to dump 8s in their mental stats to get an extra 5 percent DPR or one more hp...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you get hex or hunters mark damage when you throw a net on someone?

I would say no to this. Opens door for shenanigans like sneak attack damage and sharpshooter. There's a difference between 0 and null. You can't add numbers to null or "undefined". IIRC, the net has no damage property.

    D&D 5E (2014) Truly Understanding the Martials & Casters discussion (+)

My response was to the fact that the player was just "sitting on his hands". A barbarian can get 2 longbow shots per round. No it is not optimized but it beats sitting on their hands. I would assume he has a decent dexterity. If said barbarian can dish out 10 points of damage per round -...

In all fairness, bows are cheap. Also in fairness I don't know the specifics of that episode.

We are WOTC is right 5o focus on wider demographics. They are a business and need to make a profit to stay in business. If they tried to design a game that satisfied everyone on these boards like this, they basically wouldn't have a game.
