Why I'm not boycotting the movie, video games, comic books or novels over the OGL scandal, just D&DB & hardcovers.

In life everyone picks their battles. You can't fight against every injustice or win every argument, so you fight back against the ones that matter to you. It's not, nor should it be, an all-or-nothing proposition.

Why I'm not boycotting the movie, video games, comic books or novels over the OGL scandal, just D&DB & hardcovers.

I won't be seeing D&D in the theatre's but not because of anything WotC did, and I do think they deserve the backlash they got. I won't be seeing it in the theatre because it seems like there is always one jerk in the theater who keeps looking at his cellphone with the brightness turned all the...

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

I get what you are saying about the culture but, in the end, all that matters is how the courts decide to interpret this and who can afford the legal battles, if any are fought.

Because us cranky old-timers say so..... ;)

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

I don't necessarily disagree with the points you make but as a society we are getting far more used to microtransactions and not actually owning our media so if WotC can build a good VTT I think modern attitudes, especially among the younger generations, will help this business model succeed...

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

My concern, even before this whole OGL kerfuffle, is that because D&D is the largest TTRPG enough people will gravitate to One D&D for their VTT experience that it will severely hurt the competition.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

My only counter would be if you stop giving Hasbro/WotC your money then you are making a strong statement against them, even if you are playing D&D-like games. When it comes to a business the best way to make a statement (positive or negative) is with your money. That way you can play what you...

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

I'm not sure he even says you can't do Pathfinder 1E. Since rules can't be copyrighted and Pathfinder doesn't use copyrighted material (like a Beholder) it would be ok. Of course, I'm not a lawyer so I may be talking out my butt.

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

I just watched his video on Nebula. Pretty interesting, his take is basically that the OGL is unnecessary because you can't copyright rules. Obviously nothing is certain in the law until it ends up in front of a judge but this really sheds new light on what's going on.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

I think you are making some really general statements about a pretty large community. I want to play D&D and really enjoy D&D but haven't technically played it since Pathfinder 1E was in beta. There were a lot of reasons behind that, the least of which was not caring for what it looked like 4E...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Good for Paizo. I stopped buying their product after Pathfinder 1E ended but if this reaches fruition I may spend some money on their stuff again, regardless of whether or not I play it.

    So how do we respond?

Or if you have a strongly held opinion or a moral stance that you feel obligated to defend. Or any of probably dozens of other reasons people may have.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Here is an old thread about Gary's feelings about the OGL. Not sure if the actual quote is true but he didn't seem to care for it. https://www.enworld.org/threads/gygaxs-views-on-ogl.90510/

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Didn't Gary later work with Troll Lords? I didn't buy any of his stuff from them, so I don't know if it was produced under the OGL. If so, it seems he might have changed his mind.

D&D General Are you jumping ship? What will you be switching to?

Obviously, everyone is free to make their own decisions but if WotC backtracks that doesn't mean that everyone who screamed "I'm done!" has to backtrack. Some people might decide that even though WotC changed their mind that they don't want to support a company who is obviously willing to...

D&D General Are you jumping ship? What will you be switching to?

I may not be the type of person this thread is targeted at, I jumped ship years ago. I had no desire to play 4E and went to Pathfinder. I got burned out on it a little while before Pathfinder 2E was announced and now primarily run Savage Worlds with a little bit Castles & Crusades and Call of...

    So how do we respond?

If the new version of the OGL upsets you, and there is every reason it should, then stop buying and playing D&D and let Hasbro know. Honestly though, I doubt it will matter. People who follow this stuff are in the minority and Hasbro won't miss those who jump ship. Most people play their games...

    WotC non-OGL alternative to D&D

Assuming you are looking for fantasy-oriented stuff: Savage Worlds is a lot of fun and currently the primary system I use but it can have a much different feel than D&D. Blades in the Dark and Band of Blades are both fantasy-oriented games using the Forged in the Dark system. I've heard good...

    Just discovered Castles and Crusades

C&C is great. I picked it up around seven or so years ago, when Pathfinder 1E was still my game of choice. I wanted to run and old school campaign (Against the Giants) so I used C&C. I stopped running Pathfinder right before 2E came out and while I don't run many D&D style games anymore, when I...
