D&D 5E (2014) Need help with incoming damage math

I'm putting together some house rules, and in order to do so I need to make some estimates regarding average/typical incoming damage to characters at very high level (let's assume 17th+). Specifically, I need to come up with an estimate of what percentage of their incoming damage is likely to...

D&D 5E (2024) Doesn't Eldritch Knight's new War Magic seem to grant overpowered at-will damage?

Thanks! So it sounds like there is an assumption that the other fighter subclasses will be buffed to similar numbers to balance it out. That at least makes sense out of it.

D&D 5E (2024) Doesn't Eldritch Knight's new War Magic seem to grant overpowered at-will damage?

I'm not closely following the playtest, since I'll likely be adopting relatively little of the revisions.* However, I do want to look at some things to see if I can import them. I've been curious as to what they were going to do with the Eldritch Knight's War Magic ever since they revised the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Niche protection: the wizard’s niche

I'm trying to find a way to make my answer useful to the OP, but I'm not sure how well I'll succeed. I don't think any D&D class that could only do one of those qualifies as a D&D wizard. You could probably give up one or two of those and still have something you could call a wizard, but not...

Level Up (A5E) What A5E rules do you intend to import into an existing 5E campaign?

So basically like a save to maintain concentration, in order to avoid a level of Exhaustion. Interesting idea. I do like the penalty for getting dropped to 0, but weakening it a bit in 5e may be called for.

    D&D 5E (2014) Check Out Planescape's Table of Contents & More!

When I saw Rilmani, Archon, and Guardinals, it almost sold me. Then I realized they only included 3 of each, and I was unsold. I've just had as much as I'm interested in dealing with of the gradual rollout (often never completed) of creatures that were originally presented as full sets in 2e...

D&D General And the Druid Explodes: Understanding the AD&D Design Space's Legacy

I'm characterizing the nature of the restriction--that one particular class in the whole multiverse has a potentially inviolable armor prohibition--as extreme, not the details of the restriction. However, as far as the details relate to that nature, armor is a pretty bad example. It's a worse...

D&D General And the Druid Explodes: Understanding the AD&D Design Space's Legacy

The biggest issue for me with any druid armor type restrictions is just having an explanation that doesn't involve "choosing to play this character means choosing never to do this". I say that despite the fact that I have no problems with such a social contract in and of itself--for instance...

D&D General Making and surviving the break…

Just sort of a drive-by thought. The point of feeling left behind isn't just an emotional thing. It's also a very real logistical issue with new players. New players expect D&D means the current edition. If you invite people to play to them, they may rightly feel dissatisfied with, "Okay, so...

D&D 5E (2014) What are THE wizard spells?

I like to think of D&D's wizard basically keeping almost everything they were since they were the only arcane casters, the magic-users. The arcane casters that came later (sorcerer, bard, warlock) are more specialized. Those trade versatility for more focused special features to go with their...

The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons Review

I'm with you on Volo's Guide to Monsters. I would have loved to see more like that. Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (not the newer Monsters of the Multiverse) was still good, but I felt like Volo's was just better somehow.

The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons Review

How does this book compare to the fluff in the 2e Draconomicon and the 3e Draconomicon? The 2e book was pretty short, but almost entirely fluff and this dragon lover quite enjoyed it. The 3e version was big and full of crunch, but it also had a lot of good fluff (maybe even as much as 2e)...

Spelljammer WTF Spelljamming? (5e) Orbital Mechanics

I was just going to post the same thing. I think I pretty much picked up the original boxed set when it came out, so I never had any misconceptions about what it was. Anyone who is really wanting to get into it in 5e should consider picking up a pdf of the original on DMsGuild/Drivethrurpg...

Spelljammer WTF Spelljamming? (5e) Orbital Mechanics

2e has some better take-off and landing times on page 51 in the Concordance of Arcane Space (in the original boxed set). Translated from AD&D jargon it is: Celestial Body Diameter in Miles -> Time to Exit Gravity Well Less than 10 -> 10 minutes 10 to 1,000 -> 20 minutes 1K to 4K -> 30 minutes...

D&D General Don’t Fear the Reaper: TPK is Not the End

I use the Planescape/Great Wheel cosmology for the Outer Planes. So a character's soul should go to (in this order): 1) The judge of the dead in their pantheon, or 2) The realm of their patron deity, or 3) The plane that best fits their alignment and outlook. I favor having characters go to the...

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

I didn't read the 80 pages, but I have a question and this seems like the place for it. What are the known variables contributing to the movie's financial under-performance? Everyone I know liked the movie. This makes me think that variables other than quality were involved.(1) What other...

D&D 5E (2014) Would You Let a Monk Roll for Stats?

I think whether monks have enough ki or not is highly dependent on whether your party is getting something around the assumed 2 short rests. If your group isn't really using short rests, triple all of the short rest recharge features that classes get and make them long rest recharge features.

    Spelljammer Gravity Plane

I believe in 2e you also very slowly drifted to the edge, so if no one threw you a rope you would eventually find yourself falling out of the gravity plane into empty space.

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 will now be releasing August 3rd on PC and September 6th on PS5, increased level cap, race & class details and more

Honestly (and I'm probably going to get strong disagreement on this), I think one of the biggest things holding back even the best game building software (like NWN) is too much reliance on the mindset and assumed skills of software design and coding. A couple examples (may not apply to all...

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 will now be releasing August 3rd on PC and September 6th on PS5, increased level cap, race & class details and more

You know, this almost feels more like a Neverwinter Nights 3 than a Baldur's Gate 3 for some reason I can't quite place. If they release software to make your own adventures and a DM client--I'm sold. I haven't really been following it, but it does seem promising.
