I think you have your answer. The player would rather be doing something else. They’re at the table because that’s where their friends are. They like D&D, they just don’t like it enough to fully engage. Time to plan some other activities with this friend and let them leave your game in peace.

I think a reason this resonates with me is one of my favorite fantasy books, Lord Valentine’s Castle, has the protagonist plagued by troubling dreams that hint that things are not quite as they seem. What a fantastic world Robert Silverberg conjured for that series.

I follow Critical Role and Matt Mercer uses dreams very effectively to give adventure hooks to his players, or if not that then at least provide motivation to follow up on some part of their PCs backstory. It works very naturally (when he does it) and helps to keep the PCs goals and stories...

Sure if there is some special key or pattern sequence that searching the rest of the dungeon would reveal and cause an “aha” moment, exploration-oriented players love that. But unable to open it based on a failed skill check when they have plenty of time...?

First point I’d like to make is if the dice are giving you nonsensical answers then you’re asking them to answer nonsensical questions. They are a random number generator not a fortune telling device. Only have the players roll when there is good reason for the outcome of their declared action...
