    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

Yes, as much as I may seemed reluctant to narrative results in the Daggerheart thread, special results happening twice in 20 rolls in average is an acceptable frequency. For years now, I’ve been treating 20s like a success with bonus, and 1s as a complication leading to a failure. Not a fan of...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

My issue with those systems is that it kinda locks you into a « and » or « but » etc. Typically, these systems discourage you from just ignoring the « and » or « but » if you just don’t feel it. Also, it can create situations where the GM feels they need to justify themselves when they introduce...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Yeah if the designers purposefully meant it be either a narrative tool OR a purely mechanical device OR both, that definitely goes in the plus column

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Played a bit of BitD. Loved playing (GM was great!) but couldn’t wrap the game around my mind to GM it. I find things like success with woe or partial successes exhausting when they come up frequently. Looks like Daggerheart dice rolls produce a « special » result 100% of time. I’ll keep an eye...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

How does the Hope/Fear mechanics plays out, exactly? My biggest gripe with systems like Star Wars/Genesys is that advantages/setbacks happen too often, but in Daggerheart it seems it happens literally on every dice roll. This makes me wary, but reading through post there seems to be Hope/Fear...

D&D General Homebrew Witch Class ideas +

Sounds good so far. Arcane of divine? D6 hit die with no armour proficiencies, or D8 with some armour/weapon proficiencies? What would its main attack mode be?

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

To be fair though, that’s one of the reason some people have issues with multiclassing: it often makes no narrative sense. It was a background joke for a segment of the Order Of The Stick too.

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

Oh, non-class abilities based on the six? I kind of dig that. I presume all five other abilities would have similar « traits »? but other than Hearten, these traits don’t particularly favour a high Wis score however. Unless you can only have them if you have a certain Wis score?

What are some alternate ways to think about archetypes?

There’s many ways of defining archetypes but the « what they do » is the easiest tool to use for a rpg. Otherwise, I remember a few systems running around « how they do it », giving archetypes such as « the strong dude », « the quick guy », « the clever girl », « the pretty chick » etc, which...

    D&D 5E (2024) Line of sight ruling

So that’s why you can’t see the frightened ostrich when it puts its head in the sand! Whoa, I didn’t expect D&D rules to be so realistic!

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

… but part of D&D’s identity is this commitment to the six abilities. My impression is that many players don’t want designers to advance D&D that much, or at least, not in this direction, as frustrating as it can be sometimes.

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

@Minigiant can correct me if I’m wrong, but this class would be meant as a PC class; not a class for NPC. Ultimately, the question is « if my character’s concept is ‘son of a baker gone on an adventure’, which class fits, now that they’re all represent specialist archetypes each requiring years...

D&D General Would You Play High Level (12-15);Wiith Pre Generated Characters? Mostly 5.0/5.5 but theoretically any edition.

Im not as adverse to the idea of pre-generated characters as most posters here. I find I a creative and enjoyable RP exercise. I wouldn’t want to be « directed » however; once the character is given to me , it ceases to be the DM’s creation and it becomes mine to play and interpret. For the...

Do Shorter Lists Make Players/GMs More Creative?

In my very modest experience, creativity requires two things: Room to express itself Guidance or directions to orient said creativity Even in a « think outside the box » call to creativity, you need guidance to know what the box is in the first place. So creativity can be stifled by lack of...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

perhaps they can’t build bridges; that’s what makes them bigots in the first place. Not over the rivers we’d like them to cross at any case. Oftentimes, the responsibility to build a bridge is on the party that is the most able to. Sometimes it’s unfair, sometimes it’s the only fair thing to...

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

Personally, I find it the most tolerable merging, but others might disagree. Even with a merged STR+CON stat giving bonus hp, it’s still not eclipsing DEX. It would be eclipsing the other abilities though. Sounds sensible I’d go back to fortitude/reflexes/will, and add perception. It’s been 15...

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

If Con and Wis are still in the game, they might as well be like the other ability scores. Completely folding Con into Str and Wis into Int has more merits, even if you decouple bonus hp from (reformed) Str and perception from (reformed) Int

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

Defining what a rule does rather than leaving it too wide for interpretation will always help with said rule acceptance, but IMO, you shouldn’t care about malcontents beyond those within your own group. As far as my own malcontentement is concerned, I’d be more upset about ability score...
