I feel like that would be even trickier, as you'd have those modifiers sort of in the way of you writing the new totals, and they'd be referring to the one above where you're writing. Erasing would cause them to get messed up quickly as well - which is part of why I like putting them further...

D&D 5E (2024) Best fix for conjure minor elemental?

This is why I tried to show a more reasonable example, as opposed to throwing around your entire stable of top-level spells with an oddly multi-classed character. I agree that compared to other top-tier evocation AOE spells vs. multiple targets, I think CME may not turn out too extreme in actual...

I also like this. You aren't asking for suggestions, but personally I might try putting the (mod) text just after the names of the skills - like the previous 5.0 sheet did. I know that will make things tight, since Animal Handling and Sleight of Hand are in different columns, so you might have...

D&D 5E (2024) Best fix for conjure minor elemental?

Thank you! I missed that. Updated my post. This isn't the point of this thread, but I disagree. It's still an attack that does damage; the text doesn't specify an attack roll. But regardless, Scorching Ray is an example that works.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 PHB - a short review

That's one of my favorite ones!!! I think it does a great job of evoking the feeling you'd want to feel while playing that character!

D&D 5E (2024) Best fix for conjure minor elemental?

This thread confused me quite a bit because it never explained why Conjure Minor Elemental (CME) is a problem - it was assumed everyone understood the text and the issue. Without that explanation, it is hard to see what could help fix it. For anyone else like me: CME (4th level, concentration...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 PHB - a short review

Oh I can go on and on with specific examples. I love that each subclass has its own feature. I love that so many examples of spells or characters made me - someone who has played over 20 yrs - go "ohhhh, so THAT is how that could look!" (Like Entangle! They made that dumb spell actually cool!) I...

I love the art!!! That's all.

And that's fair, it still doesn't really come up much. Actually I can't remember the last time we've cared about size.

2024 D&D Character Sheets Available to Download

I like it! I like the shading and strong lines. The wonky ability score placement does feel weird at first, but I'm sure it helps people remember which skills go with which ability scores, as this can still trip some folks up (it's very small on the current sheets). And obviously easy to...

D&D 5E (2014) Never considered banning a spell before: Portho's Portal from BoET

Totally - although at that point, it's really more of a magic item than a spell.

D&D 5E (2014) Never considered banning a spell before: Portho's Portal from BoET

This actually makes the spell even better in some ways because if you can get the rogue to sneak into a spot and hide a (permanently invisible?) key there, you can teleport in: vs. having to have the cleric stomp around to that place in person. But at least it sets a physical object dependency...

D&D 5E (2014) Never considered banning a spell before: Portho's Portal from BoET

This seems like a good idea, but all you'd have to do is use the spell and then you've reset the timer again. It just becomes a maintenance thing; it doesn't really change anything.

D&D 5E (2014) Never considered banning a spell before: Portho's Portal from BoET

Thanks for the reply! These are good thoughts. I had also thought about the "owned" location thing: that starts to get a little tricky because then you have to ask "who owns this location?" (who owns the streets of Waterdeep?) and it becomes a bit meta-gamey, plus you could always just go...

D&D 5E (2014) Never considered banning a spell before: Portho's Portal from BoET

I've never worried about banning spells or splat books before: but this is the first spell that's made me question whether or not it should exist, especially in the campaign we're currently in. (Portho's Portal is from "Book of Ebon Tide.") It is a 4th(!) level spell that creates a...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Indeed: given that sneak attack is basically expected every turn and how much rogues handle in the exploration and social pillars, I've never seen rogues feel left out. Generally I agree with Clint_L's take: I think that while 3.5 really, really struggled with the "5 min adventuring day" and...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Definitely agree on 1, but I agree less on 2. I think that's one of the principles we're slowly seeing emerge. To be fair, we won't really know until the DMG and MM are released as well, though, so I may stand corrected.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

I don't mean to be reductive, but I feel like this is the crux of your argument. Which is a completely fair point! But it's also subjective. Counterpoint: I like that healing is getting buffed because it allows for a different style of play: where people who enjoy support roles can feel like...
