D&D 5E (2014) New House Rule Idea - Passive Initiative for First Round of Combat (Feedback Wanted!)

If you know approximately what encounters are coming, you can preroll most of the monster initiatives. It should not take more than a few seconds to roll and write down player initiative. I don't understand why people make such a big fuss out of something so simple.

    D&D 5E (2014) Survivor 5E - Rules Options and Variants - FEATS WINS!

Feats 8 Hitting Cover 5 More Difficult Magic Item Identification 8 Scroll Mishaps 13 I've been sulking and avoiding the thread since you removed encumbrance, but I can't let it end like this. Do not go gentle into that good night.

Scheduling for the IRON DM 2021 Tournament!

I feel like the Iron DM should be some kind of endurance contest. Like running players through a megadungeon from 1st to 15th level in one gruelling, epic session.

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

OK, so we have two interested but I'm thinking we would want three or four players for this. In an attempt to entice lurkers, I'm throwing out my pitch for the game below. ----------- In the days of old, during the rise of the great Empire, these lands were a battleground. On the very soil on...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Fun session, but I think I screwed up the adventure design. The big, climactic encounter next session will probably kill them. While I don't have a problem with killing characters, per se, I think this will just feel like a big screwjob ('how were we possibly supposed to survive all that?'). I...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

Fair enough, I'd actually forgotten about create and destroy water

Water. That's a third level spell.

    Level Up (A5E) Weather

As with most rules people think 5e doesn't have, it's in the DMG. The rules are brief. Without digging out the book to double check I think the only specified effect is on ranged attacks. But I think that's probably a good thing. Weather effects need to be simple or its too much cognitive load...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

It's based on DnD 3e, with some changes that are easy to pick up. Probably the biggest mechanical change is the use of the dice chain. Many effects in the game, instead of giving you a +2 bonus or -2 penalty, change the dice you roll instead. So you might roll a d24 or a d16 in place of a d20...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

Alright kids. It's been a while since I did anything PbP, but for some reason I have a bit of a hankering. I was thinking to run a game of Dungeon Crawl Classics, a game that I've struggled to get people interested in in my live games. The Intent: First off, I'd run a funnel. Specifically...

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Increases (I've changed my mind.)

I like this idea. Make every ASI also imply an increase to the max. If you have a racial +2 Dex, then your maximum Dexertiy is 22. SImilarly, orcs have a max Intelligence of 18, and kobolds a max Strength of 18. Following this logic through means a human would have maximums of 21, but who would...

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Increases (I've changed my mind.)

What do you mean by the 'agile aspects of strength'? Using Dex for climbing and jumping?

    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Races Redone

As a biologist, I can advise that nobody in magical fantasyland has DNA. Races were formed by gods, or generated from primal energies of their own accord. Children are formed by a merging of the spiritual energies of their parents, or by the intervention of fertility spirits. Hope this helps.

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

Problem is that the 5e DMG is crap. Not that it doesn't have some good content, but it's structured and organised so badly that it's easy to forget most of what is in there by the time you need it in your game design. I've found myself inventing rules for things more than once before...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

I find it embarrassing enough to do silly voices in front of five people. There is zero chance of me ever streaming anything! Sorry, tone doesn't come across too well in writing.

My roar is more akin to that of a chimaera.

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

I do do this with combat, too. I shout at the players about the monster trying to eat their face, and shout over their attempts to discuss things with their comrades (usually while standing up and waving my arms frantically). They know I will take their turn away if they dither too long while...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

Players are the characters. If the characters are under time pressure, players should be made to feel like they're under time pressure. And they should make bad decisions by being pressured. That's the point of pressure. That's why you play chess with a clock.

    D&D 5E (2014) Price Increase on D&D & MtG coming

Can confirm from over here in Europe that much of the same applies. Obviously the container shortage is a global supply chain issue, but interestingly Europe also has a shortage of truck drivers, I'm not really sure of the structural reasons behind that. Another knock-on effect of the pandemic...
