Level Up (A5E) About the strength ability

I always enforce encumbrance rules. If you think strength should matter more, so should you. As Maxperson noted, Athletics is probably one of the top three skills used in my games. I don't see a problem that needs fixing here. Sure, you can do fine with an 8 for strength. But you can do fine...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I'd recommend Beevor's book on the Spanish Civil War if you enjoyed his World War II book. It's engagingly written and surprisingly easy to follow considering the confusing nature of the conflict.

Pogre's 2021 Miniatures and Models Thread - Yuan-ti group, Water Weird, and some Skinks.

Lovely dregs! I love those models. I play Mordheim, but rarely buy official Mordheim models since they're so overpriced on Ebay. For most warbands it's easy to find alternatives that look the part, but I really struggle to find anything that looks right for dregs.

Why the Strong Preference for Discord in Remote Games?

Others have already mentioned the various reasons both practical and cultural, but for me personally there's another, emotional reason. I spend half my working day sat on Zoom. I associate Zoom with sales calls, performance reviews, office training etc. This does not put me on the right frame of...

D&D 5E (2014) What exactly is an "object" for purposes of the Reduce spell?

They do? I see no sign of that in the rules. I would expect my shrunken players to be naked and unarmed.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D and Chain Restaurants: The Poll

There are 54 Starbucks in Australia, I don't think they failed.

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

I'm not sure Games Workshop has ever been politically conscious. I grew up near GW HQ, so I've been there more than once. They used to have a bunch of dioramas in the back. I think it's now been turned into a proper museum that you pay to enter nowadays, but when I was a kid it was more a place...

But it's the contrast in that scene that gets me. The joke about 'future guy doesn't understand our technology' immediately followed by the future guy acing our technology. You could have had him look at a diagram or a production centre and tell them 'you want to increase the kiflidium content...

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

No - that one was immediately obvious in the 1970s. Note that Warhammer's Dark Elves have always had exactly the same skin colour as High Elves. Drow were weird and uncomfortable the day they were published.

Exactly. Which is what they do in Star Trek. And is what Scotty tries to do at first in 1986. But when that fails he's suddenly a programming whiz.

It's ridiculous. There is absolutely no reasonable way he would know how to use a programming language that nobody had used for three centuries before his birth. If you sat down with someone in the palaeolthic, would the fact that you were a systems engineer in the 21st century mean that you...

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

The article's view: "It’s a game that was dominated by white dudes for decades and, because of that, it’s got some baggage. Some of its concepts—evil races, descriptions of orcs and half-orcs that mirror racist stereotypes, and the concept of racial disadvantages—don’t make sense anymore in a...

But that's also the comedy scene where Scotty is one minute talking to a mouse because he doesn't understand 20th century technology; and then the next minute coding in Basic. That bothered me.

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

The introduction to the 5e Monster Manual says this, however "The alignment specified in a monster's stat block is the default. Feel free to depart from it and change a monster's alignment to suit the needs of your campaign. If you want a good-aligned green dragon or an evil storm giant...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e and the Cheesecake Factory: Explaining Good Enough

Although, if (when) your Yugo breaks down, you can fix it yourself. If your Yaris breaks down, you probably need someone with professional experience and tools to help. There are different ways to measure quality, and design always involves tradeoffs between them.

D&D General If D&D were created today, what would it look like?

Yes, but it was because of it's inclusion in DnD that it became an inherent part of the Warhammer cosmology. If they were making a sci-fi game in Nottingham in the 80s without any DnD influence, I don't think they would be drawing from the Elric books for the setting.

D&D General If D&D were created today, what would it look like?

Possibly more interesting than Orks and Eldar, is that it might have been a 40k without Chaos, since this does trace its origins to Moorcock via DnD. Without DnD, the inquisitors would just be hunting alien threats. They do that in real world 40k, of course, but this always feels secondary to...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e and the Cheesecake Factory: Explaining Good Enough

I think we are all capable of expressing detailed and specific senses of our preferences. My understanding of what I like is not rudimentary, regardless of what that preference is based on. You make it sound like gorillas trying to communicate by sign language. :D
