D&D General Survivor Dungeon Masters -- discussion

Well yes. But your options aren't limited to 'hide all rolls' and 'hide no rolls'. You can choose when it's appropriate.

D&D General Survivor Dungeon Masters -- discussion

I switched to open rolling because I didn't enjoy it when I rolled a bunch of critical hits and massive damage behind the screen. I felt guilty. I don't think my players ever thought I was cheating (else why would they keep coming back?) but it felt awkward to announce some improbably high...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

I remembered Justin said he would not be around much for the next week or so, so went ahead and rolled attacks for him. The attentive may note that Billy rolled 0 for damage because of his negative Strength modifier. Successful hits always do at least one point of damage, even if your strength...

    In Defence of Chickens [IC]

The young squire's sword plunges deep into the creature that used to be Keary, causing the partially decayed body to split fully open. The two halves flop to the floor and twitch a few times before lying still. A cloud of sticky pollen bursts out as it hits the ground, coating the hair and...

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Increases (I've changed my mind.)

This thread is very long. What are everyone's thoughts on this kind of thing: For clarity, I'm not asking about this specific unessecarily compiclated ruleset. But I really like the idea of designing races such that every one has advantages and disadvantages. That, to me, is far more...

D&D General Arby's branded polydice sell out in less than 2 hours

I can't really judge this list, as I think we only have six of these brands in Europe (as far as I know). However, I would stake a large amount of money that Sonic the Hedgehog is a platform console game rather than a fast food restaurant. Someone's having us on.

Systems Where You Dread Running Combat

Hah - that's funny. I've never seen Aces and Eights, but I know it was written by the same people as Hackmaster - the game I described upthread as sounding really interesting by being far too complex to ever try,

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

If you're checking the rolls, the vine attacks should have been d20+2 (my finger slipped). Thankfully, makes no difference to the outcome. Please use CoyoteCode instead of Orokos. Orokos does not work for me. @jmucchiello - you're up. All four of your characters can get to the vine monsters in...

    In Defence of Chickens [IC]

The two halflings hack away at the plant monsters, cutting deep gashes into the corpses and causing the vines to spring free. They flail around in the air for a moment, before lashing back at their attackers. Vines whip past Yolo's head, just grazing his scalp. Billy is caught full on by one...

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is 39!

Aha! All of a sudden my grey hairs make sense. Legend of Zagor was my favourite.

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

Good point - this is a rule I should have clarified. You can fire into melee, but if you miss there is a 50/50 chance you will strike one of your allies instead. Both plant-zombies are engaged - Granny and Bill with one; unlucky Jack with the other.

Systems Where You Dread Running Combat

The example in the opening doesn't give you any stats. What you don't realise is that Imke has an Int of 45, double mastery in the Perception skill and the Keen Senses talent. That's an 85% chance of success - of course she made the check! But seriously, I only learnt the word 'whiff' recently...

D&D General Arby's branded polydice sell out in less than 2 hours

The only dice you ever really need are a d14 and a d15. Everything else is just decoration.

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

My rule-of-thumb for these kind of 'why can't we try again?' rolls: When seconds count, like it you're in initiative order for example, you roll. If you fail, you bash harmlessly against the door, waste your turn, and can try again next time. When minutes or hours count, you roll and...

Systems Where You Dread Running Combat

I think this a partly a matter of how you think about things. I played lots of Warhammer (as in, the wargame), long before I ever played any rpgs, so the distinction between rolling to see whether you hit and rolling to see whether your hit does any damage seems very natural to me. My main...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

While I haven't kept up with all of this thread, thinking about what I've read has lead me to the exact opposite conclusion. The three pillars concept is of net negative value. It provides nothing, and only obfuscates and confuses. The strength of 5e is in its move to universal resolution...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

Well, what a perfect opportunity to introduce the critical hit and fumble rules! A roll of natural 1 is a critical hit! When this happens, just roll a d4 to see the effect - higher is better. The dice you roll will change later depending on class. A roll on natural 1 on an attack is a fumble...

    In Defence of Chickens [IC]

With a leap, Billy manages to slice right through the vine protruding from Alban's eye, severing it in two. The vine falls away, flailing weakly, and taking part of the corpse's skin with it.

Advice on on-line gaming for a complete novice

To give a contrary opinion, I don't think you need any of the books as a DM in Roll20. It sounds like you're talking about running published modules, but if you're not there isn't so much you need from the books. For DnD I did buy the PHB so that the players could use the automatic character...
