D&D General Bad gaming experiences and how they made you a better player/GM...

I have a different approach to this. If two people have a conflicting opinion about a rule and haven't come to an agreement after a few seconds, the DM decides. That decision is final. In regards to the thread question, playing as a player really taught me about overeliance on online tools...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

Since you're shooting arrows and throwing things at these poor, innocent zombie things, I rolled initative for everyone. While you are still running multiple characters, initiatve will be by player, and you can act with all your characters at the same time. @JustinCase you're up first. Granny...

    In Defence of Chickens [IC]

Stardew's arrow goes wild, flying over the head of what used to be Alban. Wenzel quickly lobs a small stone in the creature's direction, but it lands with a harmless thud a few feet in front of him. The corpses' feet hit the ground, and they begin to lurch towards you with unnatural, jerking...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

I am back against my better judgement. No snark intended here, just genuinely trying to understand what seems to me a very unusual perspective. Here's a genuine example from an adventure run by a much better DM than me. The party were helping a young boy escape from the clutches of an evil...

D&D 5E (2014) A Brief History of Saving Throws, the Original Plot Armor

And that's wrong! DMs deserve to roll too! Though the idea of giving PCs options on how they respond is good, but you can have something like Hackmaster which really leans into opposed rolls (even where they are totally unnessecary). So every attack roll is opposed by a defence roll. GM and...

    In Defence of Chickens [IC]

Answering requests for clarification sent by PM The corpses are suspended only about a foot off the ground, though rapidly unentangling themselves. Those who set out at the front of the group are standing about 20ft away. There are plenty of small rocks and pebbles lying about.

D&D 5E (2014) A Brief History of Saving Throws, the Original Plot Armor

I read several references to this scenario, the man chained to a rock surviving the dragon breath, in early issues of White Dwarf. Didn't realise it was straight from the DnD rulebook!

    D&D 5E (2014) Creating a Wealth Score in 5e D&D

I'm the same with hit points. The DM said "He hits you for x points of damage" and I just said 'yeah, whatever' and didn't bother to check how many I have left on my sheet.

    D&D 5E (2014) Creating a Wealth Score in 5e D&D

I don't think I would, to be honest. Wealth scores seem suited to a modern game with banks and credit and all that, but it seems out of place in a medieval fantasy style game. Just give them gold and silver pieces. Now, if I did want some sort of abstract mechanic to do the same thing, I might...

    In Defence of Chickens [IC]

The eight of you advance along tnhe causeway to get a closer look, while the rest of the group hangs back cautiously. As you get closer, those of you in front notice several things. First, you recognise the faces on the corpses - it's Alban and Keary, the smith's sons. They've been missing for...

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay vs Warhammer Age of Sigmar Roleplay

Technically, it would be from 40k. "In the grim, dark future of the 41st millennium, there is only war" it says on the side of my 2nd edition box set. Interesting that you do like 40k but not fantasy if you're put off by the grimness. I don't know if the presentation evolved later, but when I...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

Are you intentionally trying to be obtuse? Going through the forest of random encounters isn't 'the adventure I want'. I'm presenting it as a choice because I design adventures so that they contain choices! That's the whole point of the game. This conversation is pointless.

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

Obviously this scenario would also involve a time pressure, otherwise the choice would not be a choice. Possibly where your thinking is going wrong here is in the phrase 'begin the adventure'. I'm not designing wilderness travel to waste time until we get to the adventure. I'm designing an...

D&D General consideration on sapient folk having two distinct base cultures?

It's not as tough as you make it out to be, if you just use the word 'culture' instead of 'subrace'. There are already games that have mechanics allowing you to access different skills or proficiencies or whatever duriing character creation depending on your culture.

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

"You can take the road, which would be pretty safe. It will take about five days to get there. Or, you can take a shortcut through the Woods of Dangerous Random Encounters and get there in two... if you survive." "There's an interesting shiny thing in the distance off to the left of the path...

D&D General What wastes time at your table?

Every group needs one of those players who gets bored easily and says 'Screw it, I bash down the door' as soon as the conversation drags on too long.

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

As we're only a few names short of a posse, I went ahead and kicked things off over in the Play by Post forum. If you need a reminder what your motley band of peasants are up to, reread this post. Then head over to the IC thread, and let me know what you want to do!

    In Defence of Chickens [IC]

As you had descended into the valley, the ground had become wetter and softer. Your feet are covered in mud, and a foul stench has started to assault your nostrils. Flies buzz around you constantly. The old ruined keep rises before you on a small hill, a few hundred feet to the north. A causeway...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

No worries. While we're waiting on that, a quick bit of housekeeping. For dice rolls, please use CoyoteCode per Justincase's suggestion. It's free, no registration required. Please use a consistent name for each character's rolls so I can set my mind at rest when you roll seven natural 20s in...

D&D 5E (2014) Detect Thoughts and Dream Combo

I think it's there for flavour purposes, but some sorts of players would come up with interesting plans. Hop in the dreams of the evil villain's superstitious sidekick and make him dream omens that imply working with that villain is a bad idea. That could work.
