Scott Rouse blog - Rogue ability

Using strict rules of logic, Plane, I'm with you. If you were a lawyer, you'd be approaching this the right way. Put away the ban-stick, that's a compliment from me! :p However, it's reasonable to step away from the strict logical meaning of "and" as a conjunction and consider common...

DMG to include a "starter town".

Talk about bending over backwards to take offense. What if Perkins had said "innovation" instead of "experiment"? Would you be similarly aggrieved about WotC "innovating" on you? :\

    D&D 4E 4e Haiku

Nice. :) People, there's more to haiku than just shoehorning a regular sentence into the 5-7-5 format! Get some enlightenment and try again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku

Corebooks in June!: News from the Alliance Retailer Summit

As an aside, the title of this thread is criminally, tragically ill-conceived. Teitan, you obviously felt strongly enough about the release news to put it in a huge font. It's the most interesting part of this thread, but it's not in the title. If you wanted to announce the June release...

    D&D 4E 4e Haiku

Borne by Coastal winds, Storms blow across the Internet. I smile in the rain.

D&D 4E OK OK. A *NOT* negative thread from me re: 4E

    1) The decision to use different rules for PCs and monsters: it's a bold decision that addresses the staggering prep time that 3.5E DMs face 2) Retuning the "sweet spot" of the game: I argue in part that 3.5E's sweet spot ends because the monster bookkeeping becomes overwhelming, which ties...

    D&D 4E *** 4e Stats for Spined Devil ***

Isn't the ranged attack called Spiked Rain? It's likely a volley of missiles that need to be dodged, something like a "single-person area attack" that would trigger a Reflex save? I don't play D&D Minis, so it's fair to ask whether, under 3.5, the stat blocks for minis and full 3.5 monsters...

New Playtest Report: Prophecy of the Priestess

I hadn't considered this point before, but appreciate it now. It's a great criticism of the previews we've seen thus far.

    Monte's 4thed (?)

Fair enough. It's one thing for two different people to recognize similar areas for improvement but if their solutions are also similar, then that's something else entirely. This thread is mostly about how the solutions are similar. Could you cite to that article, please? :)

    Monte's 4thed (?)

I wouldn't describe them as homeboys. As I understand it, Monte deserves none of the credit for the substance of Iron Heroes. As I see it, D&D 4E's full title should be: "Dungeons and Dragons, Fourth Edition: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Iron Heroes." To the extent that my title...

    Monte's 4thed (?)

It does look an awful lot like the changes that are coming for 4E. I'm not suggesting that Monte is playtesting 4E, but the fact that many of his house rules match 4E's changes is leaving a lot to coincidence. At worst, it makes it seem as though Monte is passing off the 4E changes as his own...

    Untrained/trained Skills....Noooo!

Precisely. In 4E, you don't have to stat up a master craftsman in the same way you did that for 3E. I don't know how (or if) they'll handle that, but your second concern is likely not a real one.

What ever happened to the Iron DM Tournament?

Subject line says it all, really. Have I missed the recent tournaments? Was anyone responsible for carrying the torch forward? Is it considered passe? :) It came to mind just now after reading a post by Nemmerle (Yes, Nemmerle) and I remember that he defeated me in one of the tournaments.

    Defenses confirmed!!!!!!

I wouldn't be so sure, Wolv0rine. I'm fairly certain that NPCs and monsters won't use the same design rules as PCs. There are plenty of WotC statements that hint at this fact. WotC staff have been careful to state that they aren't assuming that NPCs/monsters use the same sets of rules.

    Ptolus: The Legend of Longcoat

For a moment, Akilu pauses in indecision. The press of the numerous boxes, the sudden stop to the thumping, and the breeze fight for his attention. The guttural moaning snaps his attention into focus. "Plenty of boxes," he says under his breath, "There's a breeze. And two moans, from...

[Eberron] The Khorvaire Code: a campaign idea

Keeper motivation? Nowadays, it would be the simple preservation of the status quo. The Houses have done well through the centuries and there's no reason to upset things. Revealing this secret would rock Khorvaire to the core (!) and there's sure to be a (lethal?) backlash against the Houses...

[Eberron] The Khorvaire Code: a campaign idea

A month or two ago, a short-lived thread appeared challenging people to put a ]i]DaVinci Code[/i] spin on Eberron. It was a call for campaign ideas and stories. After thinking about it for a while, I hit upon what I thought was a great idea for a Code-style Eberron game. At the time, however...

    Ptolus: The Legend of Longcoat

Akilu nods and leans his trident against the wall. He grabs an overturned and cobwebbed chair lying a few feet away and returns to the trapdoor. He looks at the trapdoor, mouth slightly ajar, as he positions the chair underneath. The chair creaks slightly as his powerful frame steps onto it...

    Ptolus: The Legend of Longcoat

Akilu seems unsurprised by Grant's absence. He didn't seem like he had the stomach for this, he thinks to himself, glancing at the inn's freshly-opened front door. Hope he keeps his mouth shut and stays away from the Watch.. "The innkeeper?" Akilu says to Vanden. "The innkeeper was...

    Ptolus: The Legend of Longcoat

Akilu gestures towards the rat's corpse with the butt of his trident, eyes still trained on the fireplace. "This giant rat charged us from the fireplace. I'm not sure if it has any relatives or friends in there. I wasn't sure how many we were facing, so I thought it best to signal you." He...
