    Can horses Spider Climb?

I'd say you'd have to have wild empathy and speak with animals at a minimum before you could even try to get a horse to spider climb. And even then it'd probably kick you in the nuts when it found out what you wanted. And you'd deserve it. :)

Games With Automatic Escalating Hit Points?

Hmm. Earthdawn, though it's D&D influences are very strong. MERP doesn't really count, since it's Rolemaster Lite. Car Wars, though the RPG elements were a little-used add-on. The Paladium games -- thought the HPs per level were minor compared to what you started out with, usually. Some...

Complete Scoundrel gives alignments for Batman, James Bond, Riddick, and more...

Well, alignment is not necessarily a bad thing. But D&D's alignment system is pretty complicated and esoteric. If you look at most stories that have alignment, they'll only have two sides, with maybe some neutrals in the middle. (Like OD&D and Michael Moorcock). One problem with it is that...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

That is marketing on the personal scale. My players want to play ninjas, I make rules for them to play ninjas. Just like I'd put ninjas in a for-sale game if people wanted 'em, no matter how silly I think they are. :) Mean Eyed Cat -- thanks for the info. When I was a little kid, I was...

    Why Enworld?

I keep going away, and then I came back. Most recently 'cause my wife is going to run a campaign soon. I've been out of touch with D&D, and this is the place to catch up. Plus the signal-to-noise ratio here has gotten a LOT better than it has been in the past. The rules forum, for one, is...

The Rejection of "Balance" in an RPG

Who's going to have more fun? The uber-powerful munchkin druid, or the bard that gets outshined by everyone else? Sure, you can always find some individual thing that the bard does better than some other party member, but it's trivialy easy to make characters that are better at doing the...

Well, I can't remember exactly what he did to get arrested by the bounty hunter, but I remember it was pretty darn nasty. And he didn't exactly do anything "good" in Pitch Black. He pretty much needed to work with everyone else to get off the planet. Only the most idiotic of villians wouldn't...

See? That's the cartoony version of CE I'm talking about. :) It might work for demons, but it doesn't work as an alignment for anyone else...

The Rejection of "Balance" in an RPG

Which could only be a good thing. The only games more boring than chess are kiddie games. :] Psion -- I'd have trouble finding a game where bards and druids are on equal footing. Hell, bards and anybody. *Everyone* is better at all their schticks. Mages are better caster, rogues are...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

I will. I wanted to read all the books listened in the 1e DMG, but I couldn't find most of them when I was a kid. I finally found the Tritonian Ring a couple years back. Thanks for the info, btw. I guess Gygax did more rebranding of ideas he already liked to make them look like Tolkien than...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Ah. That I did not know, having never played any wargame (other than Battle System, which I only sort of count). Dungeon Delver -- I never found either of those books and forgot to look for them once internet bookselling came along. I'll have to give them a try. So: we have the races...

The Rejection of "Balance" in an RPG

But 3e is not balanced. Compare the bard (any bard) with a combat-monster shapechanging druid and tell me they are balanced. Some people (like me) don't like the talk of balance in 3e because it isn't balanced and it annoys us to hear that it is. Others don't like the way it's balanced and...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

If it *really* mattered, I would have thought of this question 20 years ago. ;) No, I'm just curious why they picked the races they did -- instead of, say, the races from Vance's Tschai/Planet of Adventure series. Come to think of it, that might make for an interesting set of races, should I...

Complete Scoundrel gives alignments for Batman, James Bond, Riddick, and more...

Well, it does make more sense and does have a heck of a lot better explanations. I'm not sure about Riddick being CE, but I've always thought it was a silly alignment, anyway. If he is CE, though, it goes a long way towards making the alignment less silly. It would give an example of CE that...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

The elves, dwarves, and especially the hobbits of D&D are Straight Outta Middle Earth (yo), NOT the versions of folklore. Nor have I ever seen 'em in anything pre-Tolkien. I've read about 50% of Vance's books and enough of Poul Anderson to not see anything like 'em in there. The game owes...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Okay, I have known since almost day one that LotR was not a big influence on D&D, despite the fact that it has elves, dwarves, and hobbits. However, it never occured to me to turn the question around: if Tolkien wasn't a big influence, why did Gygax and/or Arneson put 'em in? Was it a...

    TWF without extra attacks

I think it would be safe to assume here that WotC made an ERROR in not spelling out off-hand attacks. In all previous versions, you choose handedness and suffer penalties if you use a weapon with your off hand. I imagine that the error creeped in when they made the (in this case intentional)...

So what is your favorite module, ever?

:uhoh: That is exactly what I was going to say. Including the part about D3 being my favourite part of GDQ1-7. You really are a Psion and read my frakin' mind!!!!!! ;)

Looking for unique alternate fantasy worlds

I'm tinkering with a campaign idea that would involve the characters travelling to many different worlds, and I'm having trouble thinking up ones I haven't used before. Between the Manual of the Planes and Beyond Countless Doorways, I have plenty of alternate planes, but not so many alternate...
