I will further clarify my stance in saying a Bard is definitely not a good choice for 1-4 slots on a adventuring party. Backup implies you have the basics down first. Also, mythological bard-types are cool inspirations to use but are probably solo epic scale figures that were not part of a 'hero...

That's just it, Bards are the perfect backup. It's that whole generalist thing again. Sure the rogue might be the most charismatic or the wizard the smartest, but they aren't infallible, they fail sometimes at what they do best. To use a sports analogy, the bard is the utility guy on the team...

There is a reason why bards, minstrels, skalds, etc sing and write about heroic exploits, it's because they are on the sideline observing. It sounds unglorious and boring but that's a roleplaying reality unfortunately not a gaming reality. I stand firm, bards are inherently not for combat...

The bard is (or was) all that is great about roleplaying D&D, they are chroniclers, information gatherers and morale support. Make it another combat class and they should just rename it. Bards aren't supposed to be effective as everyone else.

Good arguements all. In a pre-published adventure with those roles in mind as a guideline, I am all for it. However in a home-made campaign, you can have a make-up that is clunky and not tactically sound. People should be able to play what they like not forced into what role is left to fill...

I could live with that and it might repair at least one rift in the fanbase. So much for Eberron, eh? ;)
