I liked the mix of monsters in the original better, but the keep in the remake is indeed a lot better. One of many ideas that I thought of but never used was using the original monster lineup and the better detailed keep in the remake....

by itself? No. But it was one more waste of money that they didn't need. Sadly, TSR, both under Gygax and then Williams, made some bad money decisions that frittered away their cash.... suing lots of people in needless lawsuits being one of them...

from what I remember, my group basically used the new spells/magic items, some of the new equipment and rules, and ignored all the new classes and races... the cavalier and barbarian were rather... broken.
