So why is Sword and Sorcery so popular in RPGs?

Bunnies and Burrows was da bomb!

    Celine Dion, of all things

Her giving the money was more effective than going there. Look at Sean Penn. What was he doing? He had a boat with a hole in it to go rescue people that was almost filled by his cameraman/entourage and he ends up trying to bail the boat out with a cup!?! Did they ever end up getting anyone...

    Rel needs an avatar!

http://www.montecook.com/images/orc_map.jpg He was the first DM who provided a pie as the loot for an adventure and I'll always love him that that! This is kinda cool and was from a google on Rel http://www.utexas.edu/courses/introtogreece/gladiators/rel%20gladfight0412160504.jpg The mind of...

What's Sci Fi Got that Fantasy Don't Got?

Superheroes are based in the generally "real" modern day or future, as is SciFi, even spy gaming fits; westerns are the "real" recent past. that would be acceptable because it has a connection to a reality that is understood by most people. Fantasy, even the genre name, denotes 'not real'.

What "stars" would you like to see in a module?

Trolls, especially if they are in a temple... :) Troglodytes - just give them something magical that lets them be smarter, but not too smart. Rakshasa - masters of illusion and they can read your mind to stay two steps ahead of you! The perfect schemers, either political or criminal or some...

    What is Gygaxian?

Gygax is a sesquipadalian wordsmith. That's part of the reason Jack Vance's work appealed to him. ;) The "...horrible naming conventions..." were Vancian also. I always liked the glaive guisarme myself. Set versus a charging Remorhaz. It died, my char didn't... sweeet.

    September Theme Suggestions?

Really? I don't think my life has been unusual. Odd... weird... yeah, but not unusual. :)

    Who doesn't like kobolds?

Nasty, devious and short. The trapmaking, and more recently sorcery, added to the lizard-brain killer instinct makes them a great encounter for any level. Almost as good villians a humans are. I agree with the comment above about personality; I'm not sure why but folks seem to react better to...

    Problem Players

I think offering the chance to run a game to the player who is monopolizing game time is a great idea. It will give them some insight into what it takes to be the DM and have to handle problems like they cause as players. It might be what they actually like to do, having the control of the...

    Problem Players

LordBOB, First, make sure the other players are bothered by this also; if they aren't then you may need to find a new group or change your emotional reaction to the blurter. If the others are bothered then have a talk with the DM away from the game. he needs to understand that most of his...

Guess What?! NC Game Day VIII is September 10th!

Alas, but I got this email at work. "we have to have a training on Satureday (10) and Sunday(11) because of tight flight schedule and training schedule." Good thing for work, lousy for gaming. I have cancelled my pre-regs on the gameday site. I know you'll have a great time, I'll try for...

    Problem Players

First I'd suggest that the explorer not play the personality of the follower. He grabs times with that by the spurious drama of the characters disagreeing. Next time he takes a follower he gets one who avidly agrees to do what he wants, follow any plan no matter how stupid. The DM puts in the...

Which monsters (or closely related groups of monsters) make the best campaign theme?

In Birthright the goblins race included the goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears. That they had cities, conducted trade other than robbing caravans and signed treaties... even going so far as to let the ink dry before breaking it at least once a century! I also started a campaign where the main...

Dungeons & Dragons: 2. Premiering on the Sci Fi Channel on October 8th.

We watch ScFi channel a lot so no problems with watching this. As for how bad it could be have you seen some of the monster animal movies they had on today? They got bad enough we changed the channel.

    Now they buy pigs

Funnily enough, in that same Jar dungeon I mentioned above there was a room filled with giant toads. I played a druid once, Guirdon Phflugg, that went in to see how they were doing stuck in a dungeon room. At the back of the room was a large button. :o Yes, I pushed the button. It...

Worst D&D adventure of all time?

It was not your DM. The Times of Troubles modules were a horrible concept - the DM was to let the PCs fight non-entities while the characters from the books did the waycool important things they did in the books and the DM was to describe it so the PCs are awed at being in the presence of such...

    Now they buy pigs

In one campaign I played in the GM had a Room of the Jars. It was 10 gold jars that you would choose one, reach in and *something* might happen. Sometimes it was *nothing*, sometimes you would find a small item, sometimes your hand would get stuck, sometimes alignment would change, sometimes...
