D&D 5E (2014) 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

Hmmm, no familiars. I don't know if that's intentional or just an oversight of the new feats system.

What's your favourite D&D setting of all time?

What, no issue with its kitchen sink mentality or Mary Sue Elmunchkin? (The refusal to throw anything out hurt Eberron too, incidentally, when it could have been soooo cool.) I never had any run-ins with canon-obsessed fanboys, and since TSR chose to mess with the setting when it brought out 2e...

Tabletop Gaming News for Saturday, 20 April, 2013 [Plus: D&D is Evil!]

The two best sales years for D&D are 1983 and 2001. In 2001, folks were upgrading to a mostly well-received new edition after an era when nobody was sure D&D would survive. There were no major changes to the game in 1983, but oodles of controversy.

What ficitonal character has been "reimagined" the most?

How about Mary Shelley's Adam? He's been reimagined so many times and in so many ways that we know his look and forget his name and many of you will be scrambling to look up about whom I just wrote.

Tabletop Gaming News for Saturday, 20 April, 2013 [Plus: D&D is Evil!]

Does Marion still have to worry about non-specific drip? That would suck far more than any D&D game could be to him.

Pretty Darn Fun (a look at new PDFs)

I keep checking for the product history for the Complete Left-Handed Dwarf products. Those make going to RPGNow worthwhile even if you don't buy, aside from the 3e products, which read like sales copy.

    NPC names

For naming languages, this is a long-acknowledged essential of making them. For sound changes with Indo-European tongues, try Wikipedia.

    NPC names

I have an Indo-European-based (a combination of Greek and Lithuanian) conlang that I made up for this. I really made a couple from this base; one slightly Latinized and one heavily Celticized, plus one from Arabic. I steal from Tolkien for the elves and dwarves. Humanoids get bastardized names...

D&D 5E (2014) Would WotC publish a new original adventure in the next packet?

Only if there needs to be one to showcase new elements. Even then, it might be able to expand Isle of Dread or Keep on th Borderlands to more of their former glory. Isle of Dread would be good for testing wilderness rules, for instance.

Where would you put a D&D museum?

Minneapolis I'll vouch for my hometown, Minneapolis, and here's why: modern roleplaying was born here, in Dave Arneson's hometown.

Paizo Blog: NPC Codex Preview #1

I wasn't expecting anything more, which keeps me from being disappointed. I would hope for something more like a book of the complex NPCs from the 3.5 DMG II myself.

Privateer Press to Launch Iron Kingdoms RPG

I saw this in the FLGS today and, without having read too much, I saw that this is a physically attractive book. I never cared one way or another about IK, but this is good art.

1st Edition Premium Unearthed Arcana Reprint

    1. The link takes me to a 404 page. Searching Amazon for "unearthed arcana premium" brought me this. 2. If this is real, does it include the errata from Dragon #103 (IIRC)? For $50, it would be an insult to not include it.

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

And delicious words being put in someone's mouth. I have no problem with an option for spells, or for taking them away, nor did I imply otherwise.

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

Noooooooooo! Please, by Crom, no ranger or paladin spells! These were never anything other than a distraction.

Cover Art for D&D v3.5 Reprint

The 3e and 4e core covers have been all meh. At least it tried with 4e's cover, but the trade dress for 4e negates any artwork (3e had good trade dress). 2e, while always some kind of red-headed stepchild of editions (mentioned earlier in thread, it was quickly abandoned once 3e came out; I did...

    D&D 5E (2014) Another D&D Next Playtest Survey

Agreed with many remarks here about ditching lesser/greater/superduper from the lists. I don't want a return of reversible spells, however. It simplifies matters to not have them, and more easily allows spell lists with one or the other. That my cleric can cast cure wounds does not automatically...

Losing Interest in the D&D Next Playtest?

Here might be part of the problem: we did. Years ago. My group is going through things find, little by little, and might get some new players (as in TOTALLY new to gaming) to try, but ... it's Keep on the Borderlands. Everyone (well, except total newbies) has played it. Once the new mechanics...

Review of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG by Goodman Games

You misspelled "stupid." Seriously, they added nothing to the game; the same effects could be done using more common polyhedrons. The Zocchi dice add nothing, are lame and roll funny, kinda like a d4 (why I have 8-sided d4s). They don't. Instead, they capture the arbitrary rules of 1970s D&D and...
