D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

No, you don't prepare individual spells, you prepare a list of spells. When you change the list, you aren't preparing some spells to change and leaving the rest alone. You can think of it that way in the game if you'd like, but the rules don't speak of it that way. You prepare a new list, which...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

That wasn't the nature of the point under discussion, but you're right about this, I was being liberal in my reading of the RAW. Interpreted strictly, you can only change your spell list just as you finish a long rest. As you said, I would house rule that as something like "once between long rests".

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

Please reread what I wrote. You don't need to wait until the next day to change your spell list, if you haven't changed it since your last long rest. Unlike 3e and prior, you don't have to prepare/memorize the list every day; you can keep your list from the previous day, then change it if you...

New D&D Monthly Survey: Mystics & Psionics

I thought this was interesting: So they do consider Kara-Tur and Zakhara part of the Forgotten Realms setting, and not as entirely separate things. (It was unclear when Kara-Tur showed up in the survey but Al-Qadim didn't.) Which means... even if all they support in published adventures is...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

Right, you only spend the time to prepare when changing the list of prepared spells. The terminology is throwing people off, as others have noted. A caster has slots used to cast prepared spells, but a caster does not prepare spells in slots. A caster prepares one, single thing: a list of...

    Who Makes WotC's Adventures?

That's a good question. Here's the deal, from my PoV. Calling something "doublespeak" (a word which is doublespeak for "lies") is something you can do based on facts. If a company representative tells you "Smoking is good for you, it doesn't cause lung cancer!", you can call them on it. You can...

    Who Makes WotC's Adventures?

Who ever said that WotC claimed, or should claim, full credit for any of these products? You're making a straw-man argument; no one said anything like that. IMO, they've been very generous in promoting the small companies they're working with, compared to how most companies handle this kind of...

    Who Makes WotC's Adventures?

Ah, so you didn't say this in your first post to this thread? And you didn't use the term "doublespeak" at least twice more after that? Using your preferred sources of dictionary.reference.com: and Merriam-Webster: So your're right, you did avoid using the word "liar". But who's engaging...

    Who Makes WotC's Adventures?

You should review your history. WotC, and TSR before them, used freelancers on a lot of products. Among many others, perhaps you've heard of Ed Greenwood, Keith Baker, Erik Mona, James Jacobs, or Jason Bulmahn, all of whom wrote for TSR/WoTC when they weren't employed there? And I'm not even...

[UPDATED] A Savage D&D 5E Campaign Setting From the Makers of PRINCES OF THE APOCALYPSE

Some of that. There are equipment changes: plate armor doesn't exist, and steel is generally hard to come by. Magic isn't changed, but is rare, so your wizard PC works normally, but is one of maybe a handful of arcane magic-users in a large city.

[UPDATED] A Savage D&D 5E Campaign Setting From the Makers of PRINCES OF THE APOCALYPSE

Yes! I backed the earlier Kickstarter and got PDFs of all three versions, but decided against a hardcover since 5e was coming out. I was about to start on my own conversions, but they'll get my money for a physical book now!

D&D 5E (2014) Converting Primeval Thule to 5e - which version is easier to do?

Agreed. 5e design is closer to 3e overall than 4e, so conversions are a little more straightforward. If you have both versions, though, it's worth looking at the 4e monsters to see if there are any cool special abilities worth converting.

D&D 5E (2014) Holy crap, I had to share this find...

My last two bags have been Wenger SwissGear messenger bags, something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-68360201-Sensor-MacBook-Notebook/dp/B00HD9CBRG/ Lots of pockets, including a padded compartment for a laptop (and my current one has another padded sleeve for a tablet), but still...

It doesn't. "Ranged attack" doesn't imply the use of Dexterity, unless you're attacking with a weapon.

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

I think the point Obryn was making is that marking is not an abstraction in the context of a soccer/football game. When someone is told to mark an opposing player, that person knows what to do and is aware of the fact that he or she has marked someone else, in real life. Perhaps it's the general...

D&D 5E (2014) Observations and opinions after 8 levels and a dragon fight

Oh, well, too late to take that bet. I guess The Sage is part of the 1% of us that doesn't clearly understand how this works and found another way to interpret the rule. ;)

ELEMENTAL EVIL Player's Companion - FREE!

Ah, good point. I hadn't thought of the necromancer, and construct allies; niche usage, but it gives the spell more of a purpose.

No, you're not the only one. "Bothered" might be too strong; "slightly irked", maybe.

ELEMENTAL EVIL Player's Companion - FREE!

Speaking of power creep, I'm wondering if we're not seeing some in reverse. A few spells seem a little weak to me. The one that stands out is the highest-level new spell, Abi-Dalzim's horrid wilting. An 8th-level AoE spell that does 10d8 (45 avg.) necrotic, and doesn't affect constructs or...

ELEMENTAL EVIL Player's Companion - FREE!

Did you do the illustration for the whirlwind spell, with the gnoll? I was wondering if that was you. I love it! The gnoll looks fantastic, and I appreciate the Egyptian trappings flying around; it really tells a story.
