Ranged combat, or the lack of....

Bingo. Also, the environment would alter the way the encounter progresses. Simply put, allow the heroes a place in which to trap the dragon, stopping him from flying. That said, don't neutralize the dragon's abilities. The environment will make all the difference: you can either mess up the...

    Righteous Brand

They stack unless the Fighter is using/receiving a higher bonus "power bonus." It's a power bonus, so it would not stack with another's power bonus, if another one is being given. Feat bonuses don't stack, power bonuses don't stack, etc., unless it specifically says. So if a Fighter normally...

    Adding 1/2 level to damage

I was thinking of this, also, but it becomes pretty powerful once magic items are being used (which tends to be fairly early on). I know it isn't as easy to remember as 1/2 level, but every 4 levels (ie, when you have your attribute increase) might work. That would balance out the enhancement...

    Tempest Fighter makes me happy.

And most of the bonuses apply only to using two off-hand signified weapons (handaxes, daggers, throwing hammers, etc.) which offsets some of the potentially high damage from using those powers. It's a nice addition. Really looking forward to both Martial Powers book and the Adventurer's Vault.

How does my dwarf fighter have the lowest ac of my party?

Good call; I think you're right. I'm still confused as to why, on many character sheets, there is a column under stats for stat mod + 1/2 mod. The combined modifier doesn't apply to everything (it doesn't affect damage, for instance) so having a "blanket" column like that is a bit confusing...

    D&D 4E UPDATED 6/20/08! kiznit's 4e Fold-over Character Sheet w/ Cards

This may have been said, but it'd be great if you could move Rituals onto the second page. Perhaps do away with the Notes or Artwork piece (or reduce the width by 1/3 to line up with Feats) and move Languages up. Under Other Equipment, no need for the clothing box. Move the Pack, Satchel or...

Skill Challenges - Help Me Understand

Indeed! Lots of great advice here and it's been much appreciated! A quick rule-of-thumb is to use a skill challenge in place of a combat encounter, or as the social/skill equivalent to one. So ask yourself: Is this situation as important as a combat encounter? What are the penalties for...

    Post your skill tests!

Personally, I'd say that goes against the spirit of a skill challenge. All players are meant to participate, just like in combat. If a skill challenge caters too much to one class' skills (Rogue, perhaps, in this case), the challenge needs to be broadened to allow for participation from more...

    Priority of Immediate Reactions?

Personally, I'd say the Fighter goes first. Why? He's watching for the opening. As soon as the Rogue attacks, the Fighter does so, also - he's not waiting for the Rogue's attack to be resolved. He's waiting for the action of the attack. The goblin is reacting to the miss, which happens...

~ don't be rude. Saying 'honestly...' first doesn't make it not-rude. ~ PS

How does my dwarf fighter have the lowest ac of my party?

I'm confused as to why there's an issue. AC is calculated very easily. Chainmail is not Light armour and thus the Cleric can't add Dex or Int (whichever is higher). So the Cleric should only have 10 + 1/2 level + 6 (chainmail). That's it. The Rogue would have 10 + 1/2 level + 2 (leather) +...

Skill Challenges - Help Me Understand

Good call, Lord_Q. It's funny, but that's how I typically prompt my players. Odd that I didn't think of doing so in the skill challenge. I'll definitely let them lead the challenge scenarios going forward. That will help engage them and make them feel like rolling isn't the only thing...

    D&D 4E 4e paladin build

For a "tank" paladin, I'd go with: At-Will Powers: - Bolstering Strike (defensive "self-buff") - Enfeebling Strike (defensive "debuff") - Valiant Strike (good for solid hits when multiple enemies are around you, which you'll want if you're "tanking") Encounter: - Piercing Smite (to mark those...

Skill Challenges - Help Me Understand

I'm attempting to run 1-2 skill challenges every level for my group of 6 players, but the last time I ran a skill challenge, it just seemed like 'round-the-table rolling. The situation: a group of disgruntled refugees splintered off from the main group the PCs were escorting to a safer...

I can't bear it any longer...

I don't have the books yet (darn) and won't until next Friday, but I have a question. I keep seeing attribute modifiers that look way off - on WotC site, here, etc. Can someone explain the Str 18 with +9 modifier? I assume that's +4 with +5 from level bonus, or...?

    Making your own power cards

Sorry for the double-post, but the version conflicts have been fixed. The full-text template has been fixed for MSE version 0.3.5b, so anyone who had troubles between the original post with links and this morning can now rock and roll. Thanks to LordPenguin who did the template for the...

D&D 4E Breaking the 4E Math - Major Design Flaw?

I agree with that to some extent. At lower levels, someone trained in Intimidate with a high Charisma could have a +9 vs a likely 12-15 Will defense - not tough to beat. By paragon (or mid-paragon) levels, it will have balanced out. An idea would be for DMs to allow PCs to roll Will defense...

    Massive changes to marking?

Personally, I like how marking works currently. The fighter can mark multiple targets, while the paladin can only mark one. The fighter's mark can be more easily ignored at less penalty to the creature, but applies to more enemies, potentially reducing a group's ability to inflict damage on...
