D&D 5E (2014) Warlock trading hit dice/hit points for spell slots?

If this were something for general consumption, I think I would stick with framing it as "offering life force" rather than making overt references to blood, and let players/groups decide what that might look like. Some groups might feel uncomfortable with overt descriptions of self harm. The...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock trading hit dice/hit points for spell slots?

We probably see warlocks a lot differently, then. GOO patrons I would imagine would be monstrously indifferent to the fate of their warlocks (I mean, that's kind of the point of lovecraft-inspired stuff) and the same goes for the fickle fey. Evil patrons, well, not every warlock is going to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock trading hit dice/hit points for spell slots?

So, thematically, the Warlock is a caster who has made some kind of bargain for their magic. But the "cost" aspect of the class is mostly left to the DM to decide and act on, or not act on. Maybe your patron asks you to do little side quests or something, which is fine, but there isn't any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using Languages like Tools

I don't think I have ever been accused of underthinking things, so this is pretty typical for me. The way it seems to slot in pretty well with the system is definitely a benefit.

    D&D 5E (2014) Using Languages like Tools

Maybe think of it as Common (Cormanthor) has less to do with the humans of the cormanthor region but the regional dialect of common spoken in the Cormanthor region by those who reside there, regardless of what race they are, as well as the local culture therein. His Elven language covers Elves...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using Languages like Tools

I am thinking that could be reflected by his choice for Common while his Elven dialect would reflect what subrace he belonged to. Common (Cormanthor), Elven (High) for example. Edit: on the other hand, this might be too specific, as it suggests that our Elven character can only use his language...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using Languages like Tools

So I had this idea on the way home from D&D tonight. In D&D, languages for the most part aren't terribly useful. Your GM might give you a hand out that's in Dwarvish or Abyssal or something like that, and either A) one of your characters speaks it, so the GM hands over the translation, or B) you...

WotC 7 Digital D&D Games In Development

Should we assume Dark Alliance is more or less a remake? For a minute I was excited but I somehow got Dark Alliance and Demon Stone mixed up. Dark Alliance was... okay.

Medieval weapons: why so many? And how do they differ?

Maces tend to be smaller, and have a rounder shape, so that you can swing it at a variety of angles. This makes it a little more versatile a weapon. A knight on horseback could ride past you (a footman) and strike you with the mace like he was bowling, or playing polo. Compare to a hammer...

Medieval weapons: why so many? And how do they differ?

They did the same thing in 2e with slings; wizards were unable to use crossbows (due to the training required) but were able to use slings, which would seem to take a lot more technique to be effective than a crossbow.

D&D 3.x Thoughts on skill checks

I have never understood the impulse to dump charisma on barbarians. You know that big, ugly bouncer at the door who gives you one look and your blood runs cold? That's not strength. That's charisma. You're intimidated by the way he holds himself, the way he looks at you, the way he lets you...

    The moons are lovely...

So what kind of effect would having multiple moons... or no moons... have on the ocean? Would we even have tides without a moon? And having multiple moons would make the tides unpredictable (or at least, less predictable) which would probably have some negative effects on maritime travel...

Beginning to Doubt That RPG Play Can Be Substantively "Character-Driven"

I am a fan of the Mage: The Ascension rpg, and in my experience, it is an example of a game that only works as a character driven campaign. The scope of what a character can do is so broad in this game, that trying to come up with a D&D style challenge for the players is kind of a fool's errand...

    Superheroes campaign idea... too complex?

I can definitely see what you are saying. Sometimes random tables help to "enforce" the concept if players aren't quite getting it. It's kind of like if I ran the session 1 in the Golden age, finished, and then went on to the silver age and all the players were like "Oh, I'll just be running...

    Superheroes campaign idea... too complex?

So I had this idea for a superheroes game a while back and I was recently reminded of it. I kind of worry that it's a little too high-concept/complex/weird, but maybe you guys would have different thoughts. Basically the idea for the campaign is that there is a fictional comic book company and...

D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun Conversion: Campaign Guide & Monster Manual

Any reason why you went the route you did with Dwarven Focus? Why not just go with Advantage? I know 2nd edition Half-Elves didn't get much, but this version feels a little sparse. So you decided to keep the spellcasting bard rather than try to create a replacement feature. Can't blame you...

If Shadowrun got the reboot treatment, what sacred cows (mechanics/setting) would you put up for slaughter?

To clarify, by beef with Essence has less to do with the idea that there is a cost associated with cyberware, and more about the form that it takes. If I replace my arm with a cyberarm (or I never had an arm to begin with) that prosthetic reduces my essence. In other words, I am less... myself...
