Another thing about Ioun Stones: Since they're not actually on your person and just sorta orbitin', enemies have an easier time snatching them away from you. I'd still count them as "attended" for the purposes of saving throws, though. :)

Whistling Bear... He could whistle when he summons nature's allies. The Bear part of the name could come from the idea that a bear's the most respected and revered (by animals and men alike) animal in his ecology. And it evokes a lighthearted image. Hope that helps. If you don't use it...

To ease the pain of "devolving" a creature through level loss, you may want to just make the negative level permanent with a failed Fort save. If an animal companion's permanent negative levels ever equal its HD, it dies. It's not the same as a lost Hit Die, but it's an easy alternative...

You'd get the sneak attack for casting a ray, but not for flanking (it's a ranged attack). :)

I like the 3 round casting time idea. It lends it self to some dramatic maneuvering. One minute? Forget it. One round? Too easy. 3 rounds? You just might pull it off in a fight. :)
