You're making it more difficult to inflict subdual damage, which means you are going to discourage subdual damage. Is that your goal? Is the prevalence of subdual damage really derailing your campaign that badly? If not, just switch it back to the book rule.

Yeah, while I really liked the mechanics of the Horizon Walker, I feel they really needed a fluff rewrite to make them feel more accessible in a campaign. It is weird that their identity is so heavily entwined with the high-level ability of planar travel; they're horizon walkers, not planeswalkers.

Yeah, your player is in a bind. That UA Ranger is only designed to go to level 5 AND isn't designed to be multiclassed. That means, unless you give him special dispensation, he is stuck at level 5 forever. Remind him of that and he'll likely be willing to switch over to the updated UA ranger.
