    15 Minute NPCs

There is nothing organic about a random table.

    15 Minute NPCs

I'm in the same boat - twice. My campaign also features a lot of psionic adversaries. The entire storyline has dealt with the possible return of Auppensor (FR). I also have 3 kids who do not allow me to design in peace. In truth, I wouldn't want them to. But it does restrict my time available...

    WotC_Rodney...Chris Perkins...a black dragon...a playtest

Been there; done that. I agree with you completely. I remember my attempts in this direction. Shudder! :heh:

    D&D 4E 4E NPC's not walking treasure troves?

I actually felt bad for you in that thread, because I don't like the idea that magic items are the solution to the problem any more than you do. I'm still of the opinion that the best solution is to give the monsters you think will need them access to rituals that provide the necessary out of...

    D&D 4E 4E NPC's not walking treasure troves?

Adding bonuses for NPCs to replce magic items is not arbitrary so long as it follows a formula. That said, I don't think that it will necessarily hamper the NPC if you leave these bonuses out of the equation. I think your assumptions are dead on. I'm debating (with myself) making a house rule...

    D&D 3.x Problems with 3.5 I don't wanna see in 4th

I disagree. IME Invisibility isn't the problem. Greater Invisibility is. The combination of a sorcerer with Greater Invisibility, Fly and long range spells is incredibly overpowered. I'm not a fan of miss chances at all. I would be in favor of allowing magical weapons to hit incorporeal...

    D&D 4E Dungeons of Dread Preview 1 - 4e stuff!

The dinosaur bodies hydra never did it for me. Before I started using miniatures, I just changed the description to match a real hydra. :p I never uderstood why Gygax changed that one in the first place. He never explained it that I know of. Seriously, I like the "new" look better than the...

    15 Minute NPCs

What you are talking about is not organic design - it is random design. Anyone can make random NPCs if they don't care about the result. In order to make NPCs that are interesting and fit the backstory of the campaign world, it is necessary to choose the attributes of the character. It is the...

Seriously? Spellcasters will not be able to have many spell choices?

I agree with sentiment. I play at least one wizard at all times in once of the many campaigns I am involved in. On one level, it's cool that I can do anything with the right spell. On the other hand, I've seen how my characters can overshadow all of the other PCs at the table. Most of the...

The Possibility of "Too Fantastic" Fantasy

Traditionally, my homebrews have been so simulationist in nature that the fantastic always seemed tacked on. This isn't surprising, since I am a historian. I found Greyhawk and FR to be the same. Eberron was the first campaign I ran that included the fantastic in its core structure. From the...

More from Mearls' blog re: NPC Creation

I agree. My FR campaign centers on leveled opponents. It takes me hours to prepare the stat blocks for the average scenario. Equipment is my particular bane. I just hate having to equip NPCs. If I can just give them bonuses to cover the equipment they should have, I will be ecstatic. Random...

Love the Game, Hate the Marketing

I'm 42. We range in age from 20 - 52. The average age of our gaming group is 40. None of us has felt that vibe.

    D&D 4E Eberron and 4e - hopes and fears

Yeah. One of the referees in my group is only 20. If my wife and I had had children when we first got married, they would be older than he is.

Keep on Shadowfell pre gen PC's

I'm not arguing. You're probably correct. I was just wondering if you had a source or were just conjecturing.

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

For years I've given players information based on what their characters should be able to discern. I've used the term seriously wounded to describe opponents who are below half their hit points and critically wounded for opponents who are about to drop (i.e. 10 hp or less). Obviously, this...

24 (now 29) products announced so far for 08, what else will we see? (Now with 09!)

So was I. We definitely need more non-dragon icons.

Keep on Shadowfell pre gen PC's

Where did you get this list? I can see the point of wanting to write up Fighter, Cleric, Wizard and Rogue (to cover the classic four classes), but I could also see them wanting to show off the warlord.

    About Death and Resurrection

I'm pretty sure that the designers have done away with xp penalties in 4e. I hope I'm not wrong about that. If I am, I'll just house rule it away, like I always do.

Countdown to the Realms: Magic in the Forgotten Realms

Or alternately, they could be trying to sell FR books to all of us old timers (fans from way back before the Gray Box) who like what they are doing.
