3PP Release (3rd Party Book Release) Paranormal Power: A Psionics Option for 5e and A5e, written by Steampunkette!

Just saw this, and pledged for $50 immediately. It sounds like you're coming at this from a similar place as my preferences (despite its flaws, The Complete Psionics Handbook is still my favorite D&D iteration of the concept). Looking forward to see how it comes out!

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

It's similar to how Steam works with third party storefronts. Anything sold on the Steam store itself, Valve gets a cut from, but other storefronts can sell Steam keys without having to pay Valve at all. Why would they do this instead of only selling Steam compatible games on their own site...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

I disagree, at least in the context of the post I quoted. What they did was self-serving in that they were taking a brand that - while well known - was in a pretty bad place at the time. They wanted it to grow (because late 90s TSR revenue sure wasn't enough to justify the purchase), and they...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

The man who spearheaded the OGL would disagree with you. Quote for emphasis: On the contrary: the OGL was designed long sighted, as it was intended to prevent exactly the kind of corporate trampling of the market that Hasbro is attempting right now. 100% spot on. See the link above for...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

I believe that if it comes to that, they'll have a hard fight in court with no guarantee of victory. I also believe if it comes to that, it'll cause catastrophic damage to the tabletop industry. Which is why my terms of "acceptable" have to include publicly reaffirming the evergreen nature of...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

You're looking at this too granularly. WotC absolutely benefitted on the whole by the existence of the OGL because it helped the industry grow, with all roads leading to D&D to the point that even properties of other systems were getting d20 adaptations. Pathfinder wasn't a failure of the...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

It depends on the level of "acceptability" we're talking. To avoid a scorched earth, self-harming boycott where I won't even buy material from older editions they have for PoD on DriveThruRPG and trying to convince anyone I ever game with again to do the same? Publicly scrapping 1.1 in total...

    So how do we respond?

I want to spend money on WotC. I want the game to be in a state where it's a game I feel worth supporting. I've been playing some version of D&D or another since I was 9 years old. If WotC was being a good custodian of their IP and then pushing it forward, I'd be buying every book. I'm 100%...

OGL 1.1 live chat with a lawyer at Roll for Crit.

It also hit the main /r/games subreddit with over a 1000 comments so far (which is pretty good considering how quickly stuff can slide off the first page on major subreddits). There are definitely more people being made aware than just the core tabletop crowd. Honestly, the only thing that...

Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

The hardest part for me will be going back to hunting down overly expensive used copies of 2E settings material instead of using PoD at DriveThruRPG. I'm less interested in the collector aspect than in just having a hard copy to read, so PoD has been great, but even contributing to them in that...

Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

The customers as well. At the very least, if the OGL revision as suggested goes official, I refuse to buy any WotC product or any product published under it until it is rescinded. I have other games I can play, and I'd rather limit my options than contribute money to a company willing to burn...

OSR Old School Essentials Box Sets Kickstarter

I got a parcel pickup notification from the post office, so I'm pretty sure mine's waiting for me. That or the 64Drive I ordered nearly 4 years ago finally arrived.

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

Species is so awkward for any use other than its noun form. "Special" is the adjective form, but referring to "special abilities" would get confusing really quickly. Which I suppose is on brand for 5E. I begrudgingly acknowledge that "ancestry" has almost as much utility as "race" for both...

D&D 5E (2024) Should MAD Classes be addressed in OneD&D

Personally, I think they should make all classes MAD and then take away common and guaranteed (i.e. non-magical) ways to permanently increase ability scores after character creation. But that second part is probably the AD&D player in me talking.

    D&D 5E (2024) All about Ardlings

I would throw in orcs as well; they may not have been a race as long as the ones you've mentioned, but they've been a core part of D&D at least as long. Then I'd put out a race book - call it "Beings of Myth and Legend" or something - and that's where I'd lay out races like dragonborn, the...

    D&D 5E (2024) All about Ardlings

I would not buy that book. Are you seriously advocating the idea of a human only PHB? Would never happen.

    D&D 5E (2024) All about Ardlings

At the same time, even without a setting, worldbuilding elements need some fluff to spark the imagination. Otherwise there's no point to it at all, and we should just have a toolkit to build whatever you want mechanically. The playtest material was laughably uninspiring in it's descriptions...

    D&D 5E (2024) All about Ardlings

Honestly, I'd go further than that and instead of just having features that you pick from at character creation, you pick features and then expand upon them as your character grows in level, with choices made well beyond 1st level. Then I'd do that with every other race too. Go full 2E...

    D&D 5E (2024) All about Ardlings

And I still disagree that this meant to be that. Between the existence of guardinals, the similarities to real mythological figures, and... well, the text of the entry itself, it's pretty clear that the ardlings' connection to animals is symbolic, not representative. This isn't an...

    D&D 5E (2024) All about Ardlings

Oh sure, probably. I did express a negative view of WotC's handling of the setting, so I'm not especially confident they'd do a 180° on that suddenly. That said, demoting FR from the setting to just a setting would at least pave the way for better handling in the future, so I'm still for it.
