Shadow Jump is breaking up friendships

Thank you--"relative darkness" clarifies my feelings on this and why I don't think night qualifies even though it's in the "shadow" of the planet. I see the shadowdancer as being about moving between those areas of relative darkness. Otherwise it's just sneaking around in the dark, you don't...

Not dead yet: Options for death and dying?

One thing I have always done: You don't die in any round (defined by your initiative--being the last to act doesn't mean you can't get help) that you receive magical healing, regardless of anything (short of a deity) that would otherwise mean death. Mortals simply don't have the power to...

Shadow Jump is breaking up friendships

I disagree. A shadow must be cast on something. The night side of the world is the back of the object casting the shadow, it's not in shadow itself. The only nighttime shadow you might get is a lunar eclipse.

    permanancy

Agreed. There's almost no magic item that's truly unacceptable. It's just what's the cost.

    permanancy

The thing is players correctly evaluate the magic item as vastly superior to permanency in most cases. The magic item could suffer physical destruction but that's very unlikely if it's neither a weapon nor armor. Very few monsters can destroy any other magic item and no spell can until...

    Your Most Fun Item

Well, the party rather liked the defective item I gave out once: Longsword +3 (when there was IIRC only one +2 weapon in the group.) Intelligent but much more friendly than intelligent items typically are. It had an absolute hatred for level-drainers, though, and would force combat with them...

Inconsistent pricing between DMG & MIC

?? I'm saying if your position is going out on a limb it's not going very far out on one. The more perfect the fit between available items and your character design the more powerful your character even if you didn't increase the power of the items at all.

Inconsistent pricing between DMG & MIC

And I'll say that's a *VERY* short limb.

    D&D 3.x 3e D&D was right about cats!

That cat is clearly defending a "kitten"--the toddler. Note how the attacks stop as soon as she was driven far enough away, then resume when she returns.

    D&D 3.x 3e D&D was right about cats!

Yeah, that makes more sense than the original. Cats only attack when they can't run away or they are defending kittens.

Inconsistent pricing between DMG & MIC

No, because the price is just what you get when you put the 5 rings together into a single item and people aren't saying the individual rings are overpriced. What this actually reflects is that not all energy types are equal threats.

Inconsistent pricing between DMG & MIC

People buy +5 weapons and armor when they can afford it. People don't buy most of the items because they're too expensive for the benefit other than in niche situations. Things are properly balanced when you see PCs making a variety of choices. When they consistently make one choice either...

Inconsistent pricing between DMG & MIC

Very uncommon = doesn't provide enough benefit for it's cost.

Inconsistent pricing between DMG & MIC

Exactly my thought. If there is some item players choose in preference to the big six then they went too far. If players choose a variety of items that includes the big six item then they did their job right.

Inconsistent pricing between DMG & MIC

Except that what they are doing is boosting the value of the items that are rarely used because they were a bad deal compared to the big six items. It's not power creep when you boost things people aren't using.

Wall as an object with Continual Flame

I'd have no problem with any of these castings. It's just you get a torch worth of light, cast it on something too big and the light will dim accordingly. I doubt a scientist could figure out that you cast it on the world.

Wall as an object with Continual Flame

There's a modern-day example of a house floored in pennies. It was cheap (albeit quite labor intensive) flooring.

    The Ethics of the Banshee

She doesn't get to choose who she hits. The first encounter is a little bit iffy but in a metagame sense it's fair warning--PCs usually don't have encounters far below level and so such an encounter should be figured to be part of something larger. The second time around is utter...

    1001 Plane Ideas

A plane where everything is dimensionally locked other than consecrated (or the evil version, I forget what it's called) ground.

How to get into a Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion

I never realized it was two-way. Yeah, that's nasty although I would be inclined to rule that you can't exit but you're deposited back there anyway when the spell runs out.
