    Healing Word

Hardly. Shifting as part of your attack is one of the few ways to reliably use stealth to gain combat advantage. Moving next to the monster will cause you to end your action in sight, and lose any benefit your stealth gives.

    Cheap RPG-themed gifts?

I'm looking to get something cool for my players for the holiday season, but I'm trying to keep from spending *too* much on it, especially as I have 6 players in my current campaign. Suddenly, a lot of cool ideas turned expensive when I multiplied the price by six  (Seven, if I want a copy...

I love DMing, but I like playing too! :(

Glad to see I'm not the only one in this situation, and congrats to those who found a way out of it! :D I'm wondering, why is it players are so reluctant to DM? Is it because they're nervous, or because picking the one they've always had is a path of least resistance? Or something else entirely?

I love DMing, but I like playing too! :(

OK, I'm exaggerating, but time and time again I've heard the following: someone volunteers to be the GM for an RPG, and every single time they play with their friends in the future, they're "stuck" GMing. Now, certainly, this is painting it grimly; after all, GMing is a blast! However, it seems...

    DM Screen Dilemma

If you've already decided the result before you roll the die... why bother rolling?

Is my DM setting us up for failure? [Minor Spoilers for Demon Queen's Enclave]

Well... he is the DM, so technically he does get to call the shots. The thing is though, the general power scale of DM compared to Player changed a lot between 2e to 3e. Basically, the more rules there are, the less room a DM has to make up whatever he wants. Ultimately, though, players of AD&D...

    DM Screen Dilemma

I never really have this issue... then again, I DM standing up, so getting over my screen is easy. :)

    Miniature D&D Books!?

I was at my girlfriend's house running a game, and her father, upon seeing the D&D Basic rulebook I'd brought, pulled out these little miniature D&D books. In the back is a regular D&D Basic Rulebook (Moldvay B/X if anyone's curious), and the mini versions are on top... the Basic Rulebook, a...

A Quick Map Tutorial (using Photoshop)

Thanks! Handy tip, even if I don't have regular access to photoshop (hooray for friends willing to actually spend that much, though).

    Experts Help!

The easy way to be a doppelganger? Play a Changeling; they're in the Eberron Players' Guide. For class? Either go Swordmage, or do a multiclass/hybrid build.

A Quick Map Tutorial (using Photoshop)

Very cool! Is there an easy way to automate making the grid, or does one have to draw it by hand?

A Few simple questions (Im new to DND)

To clarify on the jumping distance... for athletics checks to jump: Non-running start: Your check / 10, rounded down, is your jump distance (so a 0-9 is 0 squares, 10-19 is 1, 20-29 is 2, 30-39 is 3, etc) Running jump: Your check / 5, rounded down, is your jump distance (so 0-4 is 0 squares, 5-9...

House Rules & Colored Markers - a sort of advice contest with free stuff!

I unfortunately don't own alea tools (I'm broke), but these ideas come to mind. 1. You can use these to track initiative pretty easily. Particularly if you have anything magnetic to put them on, just assign a color to each entity or write the names on the markers. You can easily move them...

    Campaign Writer's Block

If you're getting bogged down in the details trying to get everything down, just have an "idea dump" brainstorm session. I do this here and there whenever I'm feeling inspired. Basically I just grab a notebook or open up a word processor and start putting every little thought that pops into my...

    Monk Preview

Correct. As far as the last example, though, it IS possible if you wanted to burn an Action Point on it (though you'd still be left with a standard action that can't be spent on the Drunken Monkey attack again).

Can a DM have a PC

Well, you could always take the lazy route and make an archer ranger who spams Twin Strike every round. ;) Anything more complex than that, though, and I'd avoid it like the plague if you're not too experienced DMing.

D&D 4E (Speculation) 4e Monks Will be Defenders, Methinks

I don't know, it could be pretty effective. "Hahahaha, you can't hurt me!" -Guy in flowery pink dress, with ribbons in his hair "Oh YEAH!?" -Orc Badass *orc badass charges at the Guy in a flowery pink dress, who dives out of the way, embarassing the orc* "See!? Told you!" *orc continues to...

    (Elf) Ranger Paragon Paths

Sorry it's not a direct answer (I don't know Rangers that well), but the Handbooks on the CharOp boards might give some solid insight into builds/fighting styles/PP choices... you can find them here. This thread in particular shows a ton of builds for Rangers, so if there's a solid archer build...
