    D&D 5E (2024) Intimidation vs Morale

The only issue I have with that is that it bases the creature's resistance on its wisdom as opposed to its racial tendencies / personality. It's simple and tidy though. I think I am erring towards: Adopt the Morale scores awarded in 2e where possible. Use the chart above where not. Morale...

    D&D 5E (2024) Intimidation vs Morale

Yes! Very succinct. I think the smarter the monster the less the need to determine its decision-making with random rolling. Which brings us to another question - should heroes be able to make a skill check to dissuade enemies from retreating as a reaction?

    D&D 5E (2024) Intimidation vs Morale

Found the 2e modifiers: Table 49: Morale Ratings Creature Type Morale Non-intelligent monster 18 Animal, normal and peaceful 3 Animal, normal predator 7 Animal intelligence monster 12 Semi-intelligent monster 11 Low intelligence 10 Average 0-level human 7 Mobs 9 Militia 10 Green or...

    D&D 5E (2024) Intimidation vs Morale

Yeah at the moment if the fight looks inevitable I have the villains make a run for it. What's interesting is that AD&D has fighting withdrawal (disengage?), withdrawal (dodge?), and flee in panic dependent on level of success.

    D&D 5E (2024) Intimidation vs Morale

Yes, BECMI used 2d6, AD&D D%, and 2e 2d10. I guess the latter is closest to 5e if you want to incorporate it into DC and the modifiers after that can reduce that score. If Morale is used to set DC maybe an easier way is to take the CR of the encounter less the average party level and add that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Intimidation vs Morale

Just playtesting last week. Our Barbarian was last man standing and was chopping his way through goblins and when half were down he tried to Intimidate the remainder to retreat. I went back to the old goblin stats from 2e and took their morale score from the compendium - average 10 - and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Dexterity too good?

I used to limit quivers to 12 arrows and quarrels to 10 bolts. If you carry extra, it bumps you up on the encumbrance chart due to bulk. Rather than do complex book-keeping, you can also just bump people up the encumbrance chart (or just reduce movement speed by 10 feet) if they wear armour...

D&D 5E (2024) New playtest fighter and warlock

Ah I see, you mean if the warlock stays home? I doubt any players would consider that a sensible option. Familiars can deliver spells but casters don't send their familiars into dungeons on their own.

you could just give crossbows flat damage bonuses - hand +0, light +2, heavy +5.

I wasn't suggesting that the warlock should also take damage also but it is certainly arguable that they could take psychic damage equal half the damage taken by their proxy, maybe capped at the level of the spell they are concentrating on at the time they lose concentration.

If that was a popular fix everyone would already be doing it. It's fiddly.

They feel they pain of their proxy. Jean Grey fainted every 5 minutes when the target of her mind link got nobbled back in the day before she invested in combat casting.

    D&D 5E (2024) Dexterity too good?

I always thought that taking a leaf from 1e and making attack bonuses half your stat bonus rounded up could have worked fine in 5e and left space for magic items and situational bonuses. It's also possible to give strength a boost by allowing strength bonus damage on things like push, disarm...

Could it be fixed if you have to make a concentration check when your proxy takes damage?

D&D 5E (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

This is down to a lack of guidance in the DMG. 3E would assign different DCs to different skills. Spotting a secret door with perception should be +10 DC unless you are an elf. It's a secret. But even if you find it, it still takes investigation to work out how to open it unless the player...

As an aside, I wish they had kept morale in monster stats to give them an intimidation DC.

D&D 5E (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

The you fine tune skills, the more complicated it becomes to build higher level characters. We have always allowed characters to justify using a different ability for checks. The only contentious ones are acrobatics and athletics, which were clearly intended not to be interchangeable. Why...

D&D 5E (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

I thought if a barbarian slams someone against the wall, of course they can use strength to intimidate. I'd be surprised if anyone thought that was inappropriate. It's so common though, it should really be listed in the list of skill checks along with common traps locatable via investigation...

D&D 5E (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

I think making expertise a 1d4 dice roll works better than double proficiency. I improves your chances without making non-expertise characters feel that there is no point trying. I know that Level up treats Guidance the same as expertise and it stacks by increasing the dice size. So someone...
