D&D 5E (2024) Rogue Weapon mastery and Pact weapons

I recall in the playtest that the cantrips were charged to a magical action, which would not trigger sneak attack, as a way of avoiding magic initiate scaling damage and full class sneak attack scaling. Has it been confirmed that this exploit remains now then? Really they should have met half...

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

It's nice to see shadow monsters finally brought back in as a spell. My 2e shadow mage has suffered a bit between editions but I went sorcerer in 3e then warlock assassin hybrid in 4e. In 5e I have been trying to build a shadow warlock by tweaking the existing subclasses, then multiclassed...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 House Rules / Fixes

Could the shield issue be resolved by confirming that when equip a shield without using your action, you gain the shield bonus to AC from the start of your next turn?

Level Up (A5E) Shield Focus vs Defensive Weapon Property

That's an interesting caveat as any knockdown would only benefit mid level characters with multiple attacks or allies who could attack before the monster's next turn. I sort of dig the tactical choices that brings up. I need to read the wording of shield focus to see where that sits.

Level Up (A5E) Shield Focus vs Defensive Weapon Property

So you are saying that you think you SHOULD be able to perform shove and knockdown, as a bonus attack every round with a shield and defensive weapon? I agree that it's thematic but was it intended? It seems amazing. I ask because the PC in question uses a bastard sword which was rolled into...

Level Up (A5E) Shield Focus vs Defensive Weapon Property

Yes, I do agree, but that's not definitive wording, since it only specifies using the attack action with multiple attacks and you can't get multiple attacks with a bonus action in any event (unless dual wielding, which you can't do with a shield). You can't normally attack with a bonus action...

Level Up (A5E) Shield Focus vs Defensive Weapon Property

Re basic manoeuvres. I couldn't find anything specific saying a bonus action attack could not be replaced with a basic manoeuvre. The rules do say that a basic manoeuvre 'replaces an attack made on your turn' which would seem to include bonus action attacks. However, unlike overrun and...

Level Up (A5E) Shield Focus vs Defensive Weapon Property

I am toying with the idea of converting our existing 5e characters to A5E. One of our PCs has Shield Master (A5E Shield Focus). The main difference seems to be that the A5E feat only allows you to shove as a bonus action, rather than knockdown, which is his go-to combat tactic. Now, the...

D&D 5E (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

Could you not re-roll 1 or 2 on the weapon dice and if you roll 1 or 2 again, treat it as 3. Any other damage dice just treat 1 or 2 as 3?

D&D 5E (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

Flavour. It helps nudge players towards certain cinematic and literary tropes. And if you want to be the guy who us good at all them, there are ways you can lean into that. I do think the weapon master feat, assuming it still exists, should include an upgrade for characters already trained in...

D&D 5E (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

I don't view a Dungeons and Dragons game as real life; in real life, I don't have to wait until after I have slept to perform something I know how to do a second time. I view it as a movie where characters do things for cinematic effect. If Conan thinks his great axe will be more use than his...

You can retrain them periodically or take the feat that lets you retrain with a brief training montage.

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

Rogues have a few more choices. I think fighters should get a choice of 1 out of 2 manoeuvres linked to their fighting style at higher levels or something.

    D&D General Adjusting Constitution

I think this sort of front loading is better that the hit point bloat that can result from higher con scores, especially for Barbarians. You could also adopt something akin to 1e, adding half the con bonus rounded up (+1 to +3) up to level 10.

D&D 5E (2024) Weird invisibility loophole saves Hiding but ruins the spell: Lose the Condition's benefits without losing the Condition

Yeah that would be an improvement but means you would be auto detected even if the guard is looking the other way. DM discretion is preferable I think. The issue isn't with hiding, it's the clunky way invisibility spells are expected to work without any real description to give assistance...

D&D 5E (2024) Weird invisibility loophole saves Hiding but ruins the spell: Lose the Condition's benefits without losing the Condition

I think they were trying to address two problems: Firstly, the notion that rogues can leave their hiding place and not necessarily be seen automatically at the DM's discretion. This is not a house rule. DM's discretion is rule 1. People arguing that a literal interpretation for absurd...

D&D 5E (2024) Current Stealth Rule Actually Works As Is. If Moving Out of Cover After Hiding Makes Enemies Immediately "Finds You", Hide Would Be Totally UNUSABLE.

I agree. Passive perception should be 5 plus modifiers. I can think of almost no occasions when my PCS want to waste an action searching for someone when they have a 45% chance of getting lower than Passive perception.

D&D General The Case For High INT Fighters in Dungeons and Dragons

All fighters can benefit from intelligence but so can any other class. If you are boosting intelligence, you are likely decreasing other stats that have more generic benefits to fighters (wisdom or charisma for perception or interaction skills). I think the issue is more, I can see a tangible...

D&D General The Case For High INT Fighters in Dungeons and Dragons

But if your group isn't interested, nobody would play one, and it would make no difference either way. I think it's nice to have options if you want them. I am playing a character who started as a 5e fighter and took Purple Dragon Knight at L3. We have now converted to A5E and I re-jigged him...

D&D General The Case For High INT Fighters in Dungeons and Dragons

I think the problem is that some people struggle to view stats as more than the benefits they can provide, especially where points buy is the default. Your stats should conjure the mental image of your character. A5E does hark back to 1e by allowing training in extra languages and knowledge...
