    Dream Realm Encounters

The obvious thing to do is tap into the backstories of the characters. Reliving traumatic events (or veiled, heavily symbolic versions of them if you or the player don't want to reveal all yet), seeing their worst fears become apparent (betrayal by a loved one, witnessing figments resembling...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th ed D&D general impressions from a new player and DM.

I asked that the OP read it for themselves. If you're sure that the single sentence of text in the DMG obviously supports your theory, then you have nothing to worry about.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th ed D&D general impressions from a new player and DM.

Just a note to the OP--read the DMG guidelines on encounters yourself. Lots of people don't read what the text actually says and take "6-8 encounters" as holy writ based entirely on what other people say.

Or you could....start a new thread, maybe?

    D&D 5E (2014) The Healing Spirit Nerf=Complete Overkill

So no actual source. Also, my experience playing the game says differently, so I guess our opinions cancel each other out. You're reading a LOT into that. It says "can handle", right before listing other ways an adventuring day can go. 6-8 encounters is listed as one possibility of three...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Healing Spirit Nerf=Complete Overkill

There's a lot of assertions there, any sources? Because literally, all the DMG says is that parties can handle (not "should have") 6-8 Medium or Hard encounters before needing to rest, more if they're easier, fewer if they're harder.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Healing Spirit Nerf=Complete Overkill

Wrryyyyyyy.... The DMG does not mandate 6-8 encounters. I swear nobody ever reads that section for themselves and instead takes someone else'sword for it. Running one big encounter is a bad idea, but running 6-8 is not mandated or promoted by the rules, never has been

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Look at the movie adaptation from a few years ago. Carter is still a former Confederate soldier, but he's embittered, expressing no particular love for the Confederacy or their ideology. There's more of a focus on him working with the people of Mars (especially Dejah) and taking on their causes...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you restrict racial choices in your games?

I generally do it as-- --These are the common races / species. --These ones work differently from their default presentation, here's what you need to know (ie, in my current Primeval Thule game, Yuan-Ti Purebloods represent humans with serpentfolk ancestry) --These are almost unknown, but come...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Just plus-one-ing this. Might be time to get a lock on this thread and open a new one that actually has some mod attention to make people actually talk about using this to playing Alucard or the Nameless One rather than being tackled off a cliff by yet another Tasha's ASI tangent.

D&D 5E (2014) So Where my Witches at?

Nobody in pop culture can quite agree on that! In urban fantasy, "witch" is often a general term for "spellcaster, usually inherited through bloodline", and would be a Sorcerer. In the pagan / neopagan definition, they would probably be closest to Druids. In the "Malleus Maleficarum" definition...

    D&D 5E (2014) Iron Kingdoms Requiem for D&D - Kickstarter 26th January

I'm interested, but I've got no idea how you could possibly integrate warjacks or warbeasts with a level-based system (when PC's can potentially buy, build or scavenge sidekicks that are tougher than they are). Also, I'm holding off until I know how much the "demon invasion" metaplot nonsense...

D&D 5E (2014) The New D&D Book: Candlekeep Mysteries: 17 Mystery Adventures [UPDATED!]

That was my first thought--there are so many spells that just short-circuit mysteries, so either they do exactly that and make the challenge a string of players saying "OK, I cast Detect Thoughts / Commune / Locate Object / Scrying or the Knowledge Cleric, Bard and Divination Wizard are left...

D&D 5E (2014) What House Rules Can You NOT Live Without?

I think the big one is "short rests take 5-10 minutes, but you can only benefit from two between long rests". It just feels so much more natural (patch yourselves up and get going), and makes short rests things that players actually do, even if they don't get anything but healing from it...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

One of my favourite "elf" cultures was the Obun from Fading Suns (okay, it's sci-fi but they are pretty much elves) and their native culture being a quite benign and chilled form of semi-anarchism. One of my favourite bits of lore concerned how they used to have a ruling caste of those who...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Well, most of the really protracted debates usually come down to two or three hardcore posters who just cannot let a topic rest and who quickly get down to oh-my-god-nobody-cares levels of precision and pedantry that have little to do with how people talk in actual games.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

I think when I DM and someone asks for an oddball character, my reaction will depend not on the concept, but how it's presented. If they suggest the quirky character as one of multiple possibilities or they're making an effort to integrate the odd thing with the setting ("...so I know tieflings...

D&D 5E (2014) The March D&D Book Will Be Announced Next Tuesday

Same here--I liked reading about Dragonlance, but the impression I had was always that it was a setting designed to tell one story, and which struggled a bit when trying to transition to a sandbox setting. Not that those problems are insurmountable, of course. Still, my personal hope is Dark Sun. :)
