I think the problem is the word "race", since people seem to immediately associate it with "ethnicity". Sci-fi settings where the different species are called species don't seem to have this problem. At least I've never seen anyone describing it as being problematic that Wookies are stronger...

It's not like it's any sillier than a Kobold with 16 Strength. All that matters is what shows up in your game, so if you don't want swole kobolds in your game, don't have them. Problem solved, you're welcome, what's for lunch?.

Speaking of the Forgotten Realms, I really liked the Underdark book for 3.5. It struck the right balance between making a semi-plausible underground world, and creating a wonderfully weird and alien place that would freak out even veteran adventurers.
