D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Halflings fill a niche. They're the most prominent of the little people races. I agree that folding them in with gnomes makes sense, but I'd note that none of the other little people options have passed halflings and stolen their niche. If that happened I'd be more up for removing them...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Adventures in Middle Earth does this and it's a distinct improvement. They're called cultures (rather than races - as there's several distinct human ones), and all cultures get specific feats. Including Halflings.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

The problem is that everything that is not proficient is falling behind. (And ASIs compound this). So you get to the point where a character without Wisdom save proficiency is basically rendered useless by their inability to pass Dragonfear saves. There's a few ways to adress this. Once is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Ok so easy checks actually exist. Who'd a thunk it? My point was that medium checks are probably more common than easy checks. You seem to agree. And no one has said otherwise. I can see how you might have arrived at that misunderstanding, but it has since been corrected, so you need to drop...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

The game isn't designed so that the GM is looking up the books and finding DCs. It's designed so the GM can eyeball it. Is the GM mostly going to be calling for rolls for things they think are easy, or rolls they think are moderate? (I mean really, if it's easy why are we even rolling it most...

    D&D 5E (2014) Trade Road Name

The secret with Inns is to replace them with Caravanserai's. Caravanserai's are cooler and evoke the idea of vast distances and windswept desert. Inn's invoke jolly old England and cliched D&D locations.

Well yes, but if you look to the whole post rather than just the bit that was quoted this was addressed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Rogues don't need Medium Armour. They will get their Dex to 20 and so be one worse than Full Plate. They also get Uncanny Dodge, and of course can get themselves out of combat with Cunning Action. A Rogue with medium Armour will have inferior AC unless they take Disadvantage on Stealth (Why...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Yeah the scaling is an issue. Proficiency becomes more significant as you level up - which of course means not having proficiency becomes more significant too - which is why Saves tank at higher levels. (And expertise becomes doubly more significant - why on earth wasn't it a flat bonus?). And...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

One of the things with being a skill specialist in games usually is being able to say "It's ok, I've got this". This doesn't mean that you don't ever fail, but failure should be generally unusual. Now there are always issues with this when rolling a D20, but 5e compounds this by having bonuses...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

I mistyped. I mean Avangion. I've corrected that.

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

I never said you should. They can be Epic Boons. But to get to the end of the path you have to start on it somewhere. The idea that you get to level 20 as a wizard and bang you're an Avangion is poor implementation. The idea that you get to level 20 and then go back to level 1 and start over...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

But they did in 4e. I'm just pointing out the irony of posters insisting canon must be maintained while only wanting to maintain there own image of Dark Sun. Dark Sun isn't just Dune and Mad Max and Gladiator movies. It's not all grimdark. There's a lot of 80s/90s Saturday morning cartoons...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

Ok so no Dragons or Avangions as PC options. Let's preserve 2e canon. Except when we don't

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

It's Dark Sun, actually restoring the world has always been an endgame possibility. In any case Avangions don't just happen magically when you reach level 20, it's a path and heading down that path is something that PCs should be able to do. And Avangions get access to powerful terraforming...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

OK so how do we implement that in 5e? At what point does the future Avangion start picking up psionic powers and doing something with them? We no longer have Dual Class as a thing. Is the subclass a good place for that to begin then? Or is it better to go the 4e route and basically remove...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

OK then. You have a point, if we stop preserving tradition, who knows what horrors might be unleased upon the world.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Obviously the abiltiy is reputational and could be implemented without a sword. But you knew that of course. (Assuming you actually read it?) And obviously the point is not Fighters should get this, but Fighters should get somethng like this.

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

Than neither do Avangions! They are basically terraforming machines that restore the planet. If Magic is purely destructive than they ought not to exist.

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

One thing I really liked from the 4e take on Dark Sun was the idea that Preservers and Defilers had different flavours. (Although this was in part built on the class differences in 2e). However, you do of course want Preservers to have the temptation to defile. But I think I'd implement the...
