    Folklore/Mythology is your game?

I completely agree with the above. I'm fine with having real-world tropes in game that is explicitly alternate or mythic Earth, but when I'm playing D&D, I want D&D, not Earth!

    Folklore/Mythology is your game?

I've noticed recently various discussion where people are saying that they want their campaign worlds to be more firmly rooted in real world mythology/folklore/culture. For example, see the current thread about fey, and lots of discussion on the changes to the default cosmology in 4e. For me...

    Rules Compendium excerpt

    a) There's only one of it, versus two of them. So I don't have to waste time figuring out which book subject X is in. b) It's nicely organized. My current process is something akin to "quickly search printed errata" -> "figure out which book X is in" -> "figure out which chapter X is in" ->...

    Rules Compendium excerpt

This book looks wonderful to me, but my expectations seem to have been somewhat different from others. The RC, for me, is 3.75e. It's 3.5e updated with all the tweaks, improvements, and changes (see polymorph) that have been made since the core books came out. It's a summary of the peak of...

That's why Planescape needs a nice modern update! ;)

Fantasy Concepts: An OGL Fantasy Saga Project

I know I'm not the one who'd have to do the work making the change, but I think it deserves at least some consideration. While I am definitely a fan of the improvements in SWSE, one of the few bits that bothered me was how armor got divided between Ref and Fort defences. The proposed...

D&D 4E Is liking 4E biased by how many books you own?

I probably own about 10 3/3.5e books, plus collected materials (mostly Planescape stuff that I just use for the fluff). So I would say my collection is fairly small, and I don't have much intention of adding to it. I am, contrary to your hypothesis, a 43 naysayer. I was really excited about...

    Computer Dice rollers

This misconception is a variation on the famous "birthday paradox": how many people do you need to have in a room before there's a greater than 50% chance of at least two of them sharing a birthday? The answer is easiest to find by calculating the probability of them all having different...

D&D Cosmology: the old and the new. Where do you stand?

I think you might be overstating that a bit. According to the poll, 27% of the responders are currently using the Great Wheel. That puts them slightly behind those who have used it before but aren't now, and those who have never used it. Additionally, as seen from some of the comments...

How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

That's probably a close second for me too, and still probably not the image Wizards is trying to conjure.

How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

I don't think we're really saying anything different. I know that, etymologically, "witch" is a decent word for the class. However, most people are not aware of its etymology, and for them it is loaded with meaning(s) that are not necessarily what Wizards wants for the class. I'm not saying...

The Great Wheel Cosmology as an "assumed part of a D&D world"

Depends how deeply they integrate the changes into the core rules. If the parts of the magic system related to planar travel and movement are too strongly adapted to the new cosmology, it could make my life difficult. I haven't written off buying 4e, but I do intend to look carefully before I...

How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

No, it just means that it's a sub-optimal choice of names. At this point, though, it's kind of grand-fathered in, but we can try not to make the same error in the future. Edit: Also, the wizard class did grow out of the old-man-with-beard-and-hat image (think Gandalf), so at the time it was...

How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

Some, yes. But I would bet a considerable amount of money that, if you grab a random person off the street and tell them to picture a witch, 9 times out of 10 you'll get a green warty lady with a broomstick.

How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

It would, however, be an uphill battle. The green-warty image is pretty strongly engrained, and gets re-enforced (in the US at least) every Oct 31st. Much easier just to go with a name with a much weaker pre-existing image. :)

The Great Wheel Cosmology as an "assumed part of a D&D world"

Mouseferatu: While those are all possibilities, to me they fail to give a good reason of why the devils should hate demons rather than any of the other inhabitants of astral dominions, which, in the new cosmology, ought to be a much more achievable conquest. The two solutions seem to be a) the...

The Great Wheel Cosmology as an "assumed part of a D&D world"

I know. My post is mostly in response to everyone saying "You can do all the same stuff in the new cosmology that you could in the old one." That's just not true. As you said, the Blood War is out, and there's no consistent way to reinsert it. That rubs me the wrong way.

The Great Wheel Cosmology as an "assumed part of a D&D world"

I think a lot of people's misgivings about the changes to the cosmology is because they make some major planar conflicts and plotlines unlikely at best, or invalidated at worst. For me, the new planar layout makes the Blood War highly illogical (why would the devils bother fighting the demons...

    Gaming Groups and their OS's

I use Macs myself, and another person in my group uses Macs and Linux. Both of us being techy types, we both have access to multiple solutions (Bootcamp, VMWare, Crossover) that allow us to run Windows applications if necessary. However, I have no plan of paying (particularly in a subscription...

How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

While I agree that there are too many "warlo-" classes, I think warlord should be the one to change. To mean, being a warlord implies leading huge armies to invade foreign lands. Not something your average 1st (or 2nd, or 3rd, or...) level character will be doing. Warlock, however, I like. I...
