How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

I think that they should rename the Fighter class "Warrior."

A Warforged Warrior/Warlord/Warlock would be awesome.

That's almost as cool as a Samurai/Samurai/Master Samurai/Dragon Samurai

While I agree that there are too many "warlo-" classes, I think warlord should be the one to change. To mean, being a warlord implies leading huge armies to invade foreign lands. Not something your average 1st (or 2nd, or 3rd, or...) level character will be doing.

Warlock, however, I like. I think, for most people, it has a relatively open flavor. I mean, it's fairly generally accepted that it's a male magic-user of some type, but beyond that, most people don't have too many preconceptions about what it should be.

The word "witch," on the other hand, makes me think of goofy halloween costumes and lawn decorations. I think the image of the witch as an ugly woman with green skin and warts, riding a broom with a cat, is too fresh in most people's minds to see a "witch" as anything other than that.

I think we're going about this the wrong way.

Let's ditch the wizards and sorcerers for Warmages. And nix the Fighter for Warrior. Cleric becomes Warpriest, Bard becomes Warchanter, Rogue becomes Warsneak.

Then it's easy to abbreviate and distinguish them from eachother! You've got the 'lord, the 'lock, the 'mage, the 'priest, the 'chanter, the 'sneak, and last, but certainly not least, the 'ior.

I'm okay with Warlock. It's Warlord that needs changing. My vote is for the name "Commander".

Depends on the conception. If your image of witch is in the neopagan mode, I'd agree with you. But if the witch is more up the hedge wizard line, then arcane would be the way to go. Frankly, I think fey should be a power source and witches should be fey.

That's hardly a show-stopping issue. Establishing a mental image is what illustrations are for. Make sure the one for the class depicts something decidedly NOT old and warty and pointy of hat. This would be far from the first instance of countering the witch misconception.

It would, however, be an uphill battle. The green-warty image is pretty strongly engrained, and gets re-enforced (in the US at least) every Oct 31st. Much easier just to go with a name with a much weaker pre-existing image.

I think a lot has been done to change the image of "witch" over the last decade.

Some, yes. But I would bet a considerable amount of money that, if you grab a random person off the street and tell them to picture a witch, 9 times out of 10 you'll get a green warty lady with a broomstick.
