    RPG Design vs. Language Design

I agree with the importance of a normalized data set, but I think that the issues I described originally are still present, and are fundamental design decisions that need to be worked out before defining the data model. For instance, it is advisable to decide, before beginning work on the...

    Front page wonky

Pages views would increase though, because people are having to navigate into the forums to see recently updated threads, whereas before they could see it all from the front page. More people are having to navigate through more pages to get to what they want to see. That's not progress. Plus...

    Front page wonky

I really liked having the recent posts on the front page. :( It was undoubtedly my #1 most used site feature.

    RPG Design vs. Language Design

I was reading a textbook on programming language design, and realized that many of the issues it examines as criteria for evaluating a language are similar to the criteria involved in evaluating an RPG system. Writability: For a programming language, this means how easy for a programmer to...

Planescape - Dead God Rising ~OOC

I'm thinking of a Githzerai Psion (not sure what specialization yet) called Arshakka. He was trained as an Anarch as a youngling, but had a major epiphany that led to his emmigration to Sigil and joining the Signers. He firmly believes that the universe is a figment of his imagination, and...

"Roleplayed" - My new Short Film! Weeeee!

DivX and MPEG-4 (and XviD and 3ivX) are equivalent. If you were to export it as a Quicktime MPEG-4, it'd be the same as a DivX.

"Roleplayed" - My new Short Film! Weeeee!

I strongly suggest posting it to YouTube or Google Video or both, especially if you're aiming to start a meme. Plus, they'll then be carrying the bandwidth costs for you. ;-)

Planescape recruitment: Anyone looking to stop Tenebrous being reborn?

I realize this is already full, but if you need an alternates list, I'd be very interested.

Non-Core Class Survivor: The Warlock is the Sole Survivor!

I predict that many people will vote before seeing your note of the change, Glyfair.

    Non-Core Class Survivor: Round 16

I have given the psion the new players, and they did find it far simpler to deal with. Spell points has a very simple metaphor: money. Spell points are magical money. Everyone understands money, and they can understand that their character has magical money that they cash in to buy spells...

    Non-Core Class Survivor - Round 12

Just like the Psi-defenders are voting against whichever class gets nominated as the psi-defense first?

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

I'm totally aware that nobody will ever make my personal holy grail of a system. I accept that. But I'm somewhat concerned that nobody seems to try to address general *area* that my personal holy grail system would be in. I've seen Unearthed Arcana, and it has some very good things in it. I...

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

I think a lot of people are mistaking my intent in posting this little rant. I know how I can modify the existing system to suit me. I'm not asking for advice on how to change the system. Rather, I'm commenting on the fact that the existing rules-lite solutions all alter the game's flavor...

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

The major simplification I'd like to see is a de-emphasizing of both tactical and strategic planning. In terms of combat, neither I nor my players are tactical geniuses, and we find it hard to take into account all the combat options, particularly special maneuvers and attacks of opportunity...

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

I probably will end up doing that (modifying 3.5e to fit my wishes), but I thought I would take the opportunity to point out what I perceive as a hole in the market that a publisher might capitalize on.

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

I can force any system to do what I want with enough effort. But if I'm going have to do lots of houseruling on C&C, how is it serving me better than just simplifying D&D 3.5 the way I want it?

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

The 3-role system is indeed my biggest complaint with True20, though I'm not a huge fan of its handling of magic either. I'll have to look at the PDF. Do you happen to have a link to it?

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

Heh. But seriously, I've looked at C&C, and too many of the rules seem to exist solely for the purpose to reinstate some "old school" feel. Things like the different XP charts for each class and the six different saves don't do anything for me in terms of bringing back non-existance old times...

    Left out by rules-lite RPGs?

I've been looking at the various rules-lite D20 variants, but repeatedly find that my desires aren't catered to by any of them. My basic dilemma is this: I want (modern) D&D, just simpler. To clarify, I want to play D&D, not another RPG. That means I'm looking for a system that approximates...

I've used rpol.net several times for PbP games, with a good deal of success. It's a forum system that's been heavily customized for PbP purposes.
