Game design question - removing skill rank caps.

Didn't alternity have a skill system very much like this originally? Uncapped ranks, but escalating costs, though each skill cost a different base amount now that I think about it. They errattaed it out to a flat cost per skill rank (which still varied by skill) as being too much of a PITA to...

    Marvel 1602 is freaking AWESOME!

Were you at all a fan of Marvel characters before you read 1602? I was, and for me that made it really cool to see them in the 17th century.

    Are ray guns actually rays?

Depends on your source. In Star Trek, various tough aliens (who would have natural armor) and some high-tech armors sometimes resist phasers. Which argues against it being a touch attack, really. Why don't starfleet security normally wear such things? No idea, maybe their tech isn't quite up...

    Marvel 1602 is freaking AWESOME!

I never was, either, but I got into it with some of the Ultimate marvel lines, and branched out from there. Be careful, your bank account will never be the same. :) I recommend the Neil Gaiman Sandman books, which are awesome and very easy to get. Get the first volume (Preludes and...

    Marvel 1602 is freaking AWESOME!

Yes, yes it is. Been discussed around here a couple of times. This was the first comic series I've ever read that was so good, I picked up individual issues instead of waiting for the paperbacks. The second series is coming out now, but I haven't looked at it yet, been busy. I don't think...

    Oots #248

You know, I didn't even think that 247 might be a code until I saw 248 and this post, and then I had to sit down until I figured it out. Fun! For character-substitution like this, you can get a lot done by scanning for single-letter words, which are typically 'I' or 'A', and contractions...

Kids and Gaming - Is It Possible?

I think you identified the key factor right there, and it's not geography: your friend taught his SON, and his son's friends. Kids and teens will teach each other the game, but at some point there is often an adult, usually one of their parents, that gets one of them involved. I learned D&D...

    Bokken (Japanese Wooden Practice Sword)

So is an aluminum baseball bat. In game stats, it's still a club. It does a d6 damage, 20/x2 crit.

Why isn't base attack a skill?

It's the Notice/Stealth/combining skills problem. As a single skill, BAB or BDB is likely to be entirely too useful. It is rolled at least once per round in a combat, compared to spot, which is rolled once, versus hide, to determine surprise. Since it is so frequently used, it's much more...

    Bokken (Japanese Wooden Practice Sword)

No. A greatclub is two-handed (and should be compared to a greatsword in that regard), and only has a critical of x2. A bokken is a light little stick. Game-stat wise, it is a club, and nothing more.

Stat Generation - your wierd and wacky ways

I'm often strongly tempted to go with a point buy method very similar to the one in the PHB. Every stat starts at 11 (essentially) and accumulates costs points equal to its bonus. So a 12 (+1) costs 1 point. A 13 (+1) costs another point, for 2 total. A 14 (+2) costs 2 more, for a total of...

Graham Hancock- Fingerprints of the Gods

Haven't read those, probably should. The space flight stuff was my wild ramblings, though. According to wikipedia (here's your salt), a bear spirit told him a lot of this stuff. :)

Graham Hancock- Fingerprints of the Gods

I've been reading Graham Hancock's 1996 book, Fingerprints of the Gods. I'm about halfway through. The argument he apparently builds up over his entire body of work is that there was a highly advanced civilization 17 or 20 thousand years ago (I'm unclear on this so far) which knew quite a bit...

Any Way to Get Away When Prone?

Mmph. I was thinking of the epic SRD, my mistake.

Any Way to Get Away When Prone?

That rule was originally written in the 3.0 epic level handbook, when standing from prone didn't provoke an AoO, it just cost a move action. It got transcribed into Complete Adventurer without any updating, but I'm pretty sure that was an oversight. I would have no problem ruling that the free...

Any Way to Get Away When Prone?

You can take a 5' float sideways with a fly spell. Cast defensively, 5' float to the side, move action to stand up. Worked for me, anyway.

Who do you think will win?

Ebony. Legion doesn't exist, so Ebony wins by default.

Magic Item - Monk Wraps of throwing

Standard weapon enchantment would make the wraps themselves magical weapons, not the daggers the guy throws. Thrown weapons don't work quite like bows- if your bow is +5, your attack is at +5 and your damage is 1d8+5. There is no equivalent for throwing. You'd probably need to base this off...

    Kudos to the Moderators!

Hey, whoever turned on the "1 post per 30 seconds" filter, that's a swell feature. It just kept me from accidentally double-posting, and as a bonus, it will slow Crothian down!
