Bob the World Builder Interviews Kyle Brink

Biggest take away so far for me that hasn't been covered in other interviews (not finished listening) is around the 33:00 minute mark. In addition to the scrambling to put out actual changes to the OGL and not wanting to communicate until something concrete could be said so as not to flame the...

Breaking into Keys from the Golden Vault: An In-Depth Review

This is definitely a strong book. I think almost all of the adventures are well crafted, and the theming is well implemented (good maps, well laid out information, and a strong emphasis on heisting not combat to solve the situations). For those who would have liked to see new mechanics around...

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

But not so under the OGL, as it was very simple to declare what was open and what was closed with the built in mechanisms of the license. Which again, was the topic and context I was originally pointing at.

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

It does if you are trying to hold elements out as closed content, while leaving other content as open content, which is the entire point of what I'm discussing. Somewhere, you have to expressly differentiate between the two, and it gets tricker as you include more content from various sources...

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

Unless you are significantly modifying the previous work, and need to clarify what is CC from that previous source. And if you are mixing various CC licenses in your work, it gets even more complicated.

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

If you have to cite every paragraph in a 250 page document and mark it as the correct license it was sourced from, and under what license it is being released under, than that is a huge amount of work, both in writing (keeping notes), layout (designing how you will cite this information- is it...

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

I will revise then - Creative Commons puts much more burden on the publisher to attempt to contribute to this ecosystem, which is a much higher barrier to entry than the OGL provided. An end result might actually be clearer to someone who wants to make use of the material, but there are...

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

First, I agree with you that Creative Commons is a more open license, and that it definitely is more solid on the legal front than the OGL 1.0a at this point in time. That said, there are still issues, and they amount to much more than layout concerns. Creative Commons doesn't have a mechanism...

Ginny Di interviews WotC's Kyle Brink

Plenty of other products, including Pathfinder 2e, moved away from the term race well before WotC did. Products were problematic because they were problematic, not because WotC moved some goal post.

Kyle Brink (D&D Exec Producer) On OGL Controversy & One D&D (Summary)

He specifically committed to releasing a new SRD, probably as 5.2 or an equivalent update. He says the SRD will be fully compatible with the upcoming rules updates. It will be 5th edition, but improvements to 5th edition. Edit to fix link, as it was embedding the video weird: This video...

    D&D 5E (2024) So Will 'OneD&D' (6E) Actually Be Backwards Compatible?

Absolutely yes. That is how Windows works, and it is the most used OS in the world. Point being, Windows is not incorrect to claim backwards compatibility. The end user experience isn't always great, and yes, it might be a crappy OS (hello from my Mac!). But it is backwards compatible. Whether...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Reveals New Golden Vault Details

I haven't seen this pop up in this thread yet, so if anyone is looking for a 5e adaptation of Blades in the Dark rules, this DM's Guild product is a really solid option. Edit: I'll also add, I hope the book provides some guidance like this when we have the whole thing, but in case it doesn't...

    D&D 5E (2024) So Will 'OneD&D' (6E) Actually Be Backwards Compatible?

I mean, that just isn't even how backwards compatibility works for software. For instance, as various versions of Windows were released, they provided backwards compatibility for DOS or earlier Windows software. But almost none of that is seamless, and almost all of it requires some effort by...

    D&D 5E (2024) So Will 'OneD&D' (6E) Actually Be Backwards Compatible?

To me, that is an enhancement of fiction. More chance to roleplay. Mechanically they are compatible, and actually adds interest to the storytelling.

    D&D 5E (2024) So Will 'OneD&D' (6E) Actually Be Backwards Compatible?

I agree personally - I think as long as the content (like Spelljammer) still runs, it is compatible. A lot of the discussion on the last couple of pages have been about how compatibility needs to come down to the character builds, not having duplicate versions of rules in play, etc. I don't...

    D&D 5E (2024) So Will 'OneD&D' (6E) Actually Be Backwards Compatible?

Or, as I mentioned above, patch 5e with an end-of-edition errata to bring things like spells and feats in-line with 1DND. Then it really is just legacy builds vs 1DND builds, but there aren't two different versions of feats, spells, weapons, etc. in play at the table.

    D&D 5E (2024) So Will 'OneD&D' (6E) Actually Be Backwards Compatible?

Yep, that's how I would handle it at my table, unless WotC gave specific guidelines in 1DND for cross-stream character building.

    D&D 5E (2024) So Will 'OneD&D' (6E) Actually Be Backwards Compatible?

The simplest way for WotC to prove compatibility is to patch 5e 2014 with a final errata. I could see any MAJOR changes or areas where not wanting two versions of something (Feats and spells, for instance) getting revised in downloadable errata, bringing the systems more in line. I doubt it...

D&D 5E (2014) Which D&D books currently scheduled for 2023 are you interested in?

I've run heist encounters in 5e and they can go really well. I'd say at this point 5e doesn't have official heist rules, so it isn't exactly surprising that the system isn't great as stands for heists, unless the DM makes it happen. As it currently stands, without DM intervention, a heist often...
