Pathfinder 1E This is why pathfinder has been successful.

Right, a campaign session might include the following: 1) Gather at tavern, role-play interaction with other bar patrons, proposition saucy barmaid. In game time: Several hours. 2) Receive summons from the high priest of Pelor, alerting them to goblin raids on the outlying villages. Go to...

    Kingmaker in the Scarred Lands

I'm planning to run Kingmaker some time in the near future, and I've been given some though to setting it in the Scarred Lands. In some ways, I think the exploration/civilizing dimension of the campaign lends itself quite well to the post-apocalyptic feel of SL, but I'm wondering what others...

    Scarred Lands: Best Books?

*CASTS "RAISE THREAD"* I wanted to resurrect this thread to comment that this whole conversation was enormously helpful to me over the last couple of days. Much to my disappointment, I appear to have lost an entire box of Role Playing books somewhere along the way, which contained most of my...

Pathfinder 1E This is why pathfinder has been successful.

Ok, the same people have to stop making clever and insightful comments that I want to give XP for over and over, because the system refuses to let me give you any more! So, for the record, S'mon and Ironwolf sum up my own perspective quite well. The debate seems to be over whether, if I don't...

Pathfinder 1E This is why pathfinder has been successful.

Well, in fairness, I play with a lot of players who are more than capable of exploiting the rules for maximum effect at the slightest provocation, to the degree that I often find it difficult to actually ROLE PLAY, since we spend far too much time RULE playing (this ability lets you do this, so...

George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series

Well, Lucas is the only writer credited on the original screenplay. I had always heard he wrote it with a copy of Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey" sitting next to him on the desk, so I'm inclined to believe that he wrote most of the original movie himself. And in fairness, Lucas was capable...

Pathfinder 1E This is why pathfinder has been successful.

This is interesting to me, since I'm planning to run Kingmaker in the near future. Any advice/strategy about how to avoid these problems? I'm interested in this being a role-play long term thinking campaign, not a "let me min-max my character to walk all over the challenges" kind of campaign.

George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series

Well the thing is, he could have satirized the racial stereotypes in some way, so as to show that a) they were part of these old fashioned serials and b) they deserve to be satirized. But he doesn't really have the capacity for satire. He takes himself far too seriously, as his whole "I won't do...

George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series

Let me just follow up last nights post by stating that the worst thing for me about the prequel trilogy is that they've made the originals almost unwatchable for me. Every time Obi Wan tells Luke about his father for the first time in "A New Hope" I have flashbacks to the pod race in Episode One...

George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series

I think what Lucas fails to realize is that it's NOT that fans will criticize anyone and anything that changes the Star Wars story. There have been LOTS of Star Wars stories that have been very well received by the fans ("Legacy," "Knights of the Old Republic," "Jedi Academy series"). Fans are...

Take a trip down memory lane

Good times, good times. I used to hit that site two and three times a day back when 3e was new to the world. There's a lot I miss about those days.

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

I wonder if part of the issue is the difference between how it is experienced as a player vs. how it is experienced as a DM. If you're a player, and you've got a decent DM, and you've never actually read the module yourself, you may walk away thinking that the whole thing was "fair," because it...

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

I suppose the question is this: What do you need to own/sell in order to make a "universal game"? If the goal is to reunite the warring factions in the editions wars, they'll have to strive to make something that will draw people away from what they're currently playing, and yet allow them to...

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

I agree entirely. And I think it's Gygax's introduction to the module that really set that reputation up, since if I recall he says as much himself. And truthfully, in his own head, maybe he really thought it was fair. But the fact that it really isn't is only a problem from a metagame...
