How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

I never had a fight in 4E that dragged on enough to truly become boring, but I certainly experienced this inversion of what I assume the intent is, where "He's bloodied!" becomes a cry of despair rather than rising morale (as it is with weaker opponents). "He's only bloodied... and we're out of...

How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

    A very interesting observation.

How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

The thing is that, barring unusual circumstances, demoralizing (for example) is bad tactics, unless you've invested heavily in it, in which case you're probably doing it all the tame (v. spamming your favourite attack). There's too much of an opportunity cost to doing something other than what...

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

I don't think it's that simple. Taking 30% more hits doesn't just mean 30% more hit point damage, it also means 30% more chance to be slowed, stunned, pushed, see your enemies healed, see your enemies get bonuses against you...

How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

Unusual situations. Multiple melee PCs trying to engage a single melee opponent in a 5 ft. wide passage makes overrun very attractive, even if it means you won't do any damage or that you'll take an AoO. Margin for error, both in terms of tactics and character design. At very high levels, my...

How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

This matches my experience. Fighters with Leap Attack, paladins with Spirited Charge, spiked-chain wielders with Improved Trip... with a big enough hammer, everything looks like a nail. :)

    Preview: The Warden

I think you misremember. On average, Fort is the highest of the non-AC defenses, so high that non-weapon attacks vs. Fort are more difficult than weapon attacks vs. AC, i.e. Fort is less than 2-3 points lower than AC. But it's still lower, and weapon vs. Fort is in most cases better than weapon...

    Preview: The Warden

Ah, that is indeed on the light side. The post I replied to said "(all but 1 of the encounter powers do 2[W])", which gave much the opposite impression.

    Preview: The Warden

Isn't 2[W] standard for low-level encounter powers? There is a significant number of powers that deal just 1[W]. How much damage does that one power that's not 2[W] do?

"Stuck" playing 4e (i.e. unwilling converts)

Why? Were magic items impossible to buy or make?

Suggest a feat for a witch hunter

I don't think I'm glossing over any roleplaying requirements...? I don't see any problem with this. Mage hunters can be magic-haters, but it's not required. In fact, there's a pretty strong trope of a witch hunter whose frequent contact with black magic and a bit of pragmatism leads him to...

    Warforged Construct costs?

Asking this question is just like asking "I want to grow an elf in a vat, what are the costs and requirements". There isn't anything wrong with either idea, but you really aren't going to find it in the books; you'll just have to talk to your DM. However, if the point isn't to make your own...

Suggest a feat for a witch hunter

Actually, I was planning to be... Look at it this way: hp aren't any worse than a rogue's, AC is a shield of faith away from matching the rogue's, and Knowledge Devotion makes up for BAB (iterative attack will have to wait, of course). That sounds interesting! I'll check it out. This would be...

Suggest a feat for a witch hunter

I'm making a rogue 1/cloistered cleric 3 for an Eberron game. The idea is a guy who uses brain rather than brawn to handle himself in melee. My domains are War (longsword as a favoured weapon), Travel and Knowledge, and I have Knowledge Devotion (to make up some for crappy BAB) and Able Learner...

The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

Eh, I guess with all the implications that it's only heroism if you're hurling yourself into danger without regard for chances of success, I must've misinterpreted your point. Sorry. :)

The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

Do you really think it's insightful or are you just being sarcastic? So D&D characters are heroic, right? In every game I've ever played in, there was always danger. Sometimes we had good plans, good gear, access to resurrection magic, allies with access to resurrection magic... but always...

    I'm bored with it all.

I play in two groups that overlap only slightly. One group just finished Age of Worms. The game started with a TPK on the second encounter (acid beetle swarm... no alchemist's fire? foolish fools!). One of the highlights (for me, at least) was when my wizard subdued an undamaged pit fiend in a...

The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

As a player, you aren't acting heroically even when there is a significant, unknown risk of failure for the charater, since you're still doing nothing more than sitting in someone's basement pretending to be an elf.
