Just a quick note... Shadow spells create a semi-real thing made out of a shadowstuff. The wall of iron you mention is in fact 80% real. If you try to walk through it by disbelieving it, I imagine you'd 'run into' some problems.

In the SRD at least, I see nothing in the Shadow X spells about requiring the material component for the spell that they mimic. Does this mean that Shades could be used to, for example, cast Trap the Soul on a gem made of shadowstuff?

I prefer roleplaying one character, but commanding several in combat. Another possibility is switching out characters to roleplay. I tend to get bored sticking with one character all the time for everything.

Slight derail. I've been playing an Exalted campaign, and while it's not D&D, to me at least it feels like the next step in role playing. The system actively rewards vivid descriptions and heroics. It seems to me like what the OP was saying about feeling heroic rather than wargamey is better...
