Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

No thanks. Not interested in that kind of game. I consider my style a derivation of trad. I also question the wisdom of OC/Neotrad truly being dominant. It just seems to be because OC/neotrad is heavily weighted towards online representation, giving us a strong perception bias that it's much...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I'm a strong believer in the idea of chucking the "balanced party" paradigm. If a GM is passive-aggressively punishing players for playing the characters that they want to by making them fail if they don't have all of the roles from classic D&D TV Tropes party, then he needs to take a step back...

What are you reading in 2025?

I just finished a collection called The Cthulhu Stories of Robert E. Howard. I'll be turning to actual Lovecraft soon, but first, I'm reading one of the old Arkham Horror tie-in trilogies; Lord of Nightmares. I'm on the second book, Lies of Solace I think it's called. I'm also re-reading the d20...

Gaming/RPG Fiction Should Make A Comeback

Why did the market disappear? I presume sales were down. That doesn't seem to be something that's likely to change anytime too soon.

    Second person plural pronoun

Y'all is not limited to the south, although it is usually a lower prestige grammatical formation, and you won't hear it too much in the halls of academia or anything like that. It's pretty common everywhere rural, and is as much western as southern.

    Second person plural pronoun

To be clear, y'all is for a small group; otherwise, the correct grammatical formulation is "all y'all."

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* | Big Game Trailer | In Theaters May 2

Well, that's true too. The ones that I won't see in theatres, I don't intend to see at all unless I get very unexpected feedback that they're quite a bit better than expected. It's sad to me as a long time nerd culture fan to think that I'm actually quite discriminating now in what I'll pay...

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* | Big Game Trailer | In Theaters May 2

Me too. Even moreso; I've decided that I don't want to see hardly ANY of the Marvel movies in theatre anymore. But this is one of the few that--so far--I think might be worth making an exception for.

How do you put aside your own feelings when reading?

I presume you mean about Starship Troopers' political/social subtext, and therefore other works' political/social subtext. I'd say that my political/social views aren't based on my feelings, but rather my conclusions after many years of study. My feelings about books that try to play on my...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

And will continue to do so, because people who have played lots of systems recognize the 5e is most like a slightly streamlined 3e than it is just about anything else you could care to compare it to. Your characterization of 3e is also flawed from the start. 3e had two mottos. And while "back...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

Sanitized - check Quixotically chasing mainstreamization - check Sending lawyers after fans - check. Well, that's not exactly a completely accurate description of the OGL situation, and the Pinkerton situation strictly speaking wasn't D&D. Reorganized and cleaned up an earlier version without...

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

Neither. The combat system is simply very similar. Everything about 5e combat, after not actually playing much D&D per se the last several years, feels very deja vu to my many years of 3e.

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

Combat feels almost identical to me between 3e and 5e. But then again, I never really played 4e enough to comment. But it was clearly unlike any earlier version of D&D.

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

Funny, I haven't played too much 5e, although I'm in two games of it right now. It feels exactly like playing 3e to me, except that a bunch of stuff is weird and doesn't work quite right. That was true for me before the 3e era ended. I bought plenty of 3e stuff, but I didn't care about new...

    What's your VTT of choice?

Yeah, that's the key. I am a solid totm kinda guy, and don't care for systems with near obligatory tactical maps even in person.

When did the "C" drop from CRPGs and when did "TT"RPG spring up?

Well, I saw it in rpg.net and even the predecessor sites to this one way back in the late 90s and early 00s. But not a lot. Most of the time, the context is such that you don't need to distinguish TTRPGs from CRPGs, so you can just say RPGs and everyone knows which one you're talking about from...

What are your TTRPG Goals for 2025?

I'm running a game and playing a game. Both are 5e, which I don't really like a ton. I'd really like to run my game that works my way. I don't even care for who, to some degree. My players and fellow players don't really have any experience with any other game, and can't imagine a world outside...

When did the "C" drop from CRPGs and when did "TT"RPG spring up?

I've heard TTRPG for decades. As long as I've heard CRPG. They were both created to differentiate from each other. But as more and more the idea of "gamer" was someone who played computer or console games, the context of TTRPG became less important, so they started just using RPG, because the...

How important is it to you or your players for characters to feel "overpowered"?

If it's very important to me to avoid, then no, it isn't. But whatever. I see your point.

How important is it to you or your players for characters to feel "overpowered"?

It very much does play a role. Just in the opposite direction of the expectation of the poll. My fantasy games feel more like Call of Cthulhu in terms of tone and theme, and that's by design. So "overpowered" character mechanics are a big red flag to me. Anyway, I guess that was more of a vote...
