    D&D 5E (2014) My thoughts on 5E

The basic rules have been available for free for a while, and have less moving parts to be concerned with when you are starting out. Use them till you learn the systems. I'd advise against nixing things you don't understand as a reflex though.

D&D 5E (2014) Instant gratification versus saving money

My FLGS sold it at a 20% discount for preorders. Had to pay tax on it (but that will be equal out because you pay local sales tax on all purchases through Amazon out of the goodness of your heart and desire to be a law abiding citizen right?) but it was not terribly expensive. In this case...

    D&D 5E (2014) Second Wind

Seems like what you are missing here is that 'too much healing' is meaningless. The amount of healing and hit points is only meaningful in reference to the amount of damage monsters and traps have a chance to be doing at the players level. Yes PCs have more opportunities for healing in this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Finally

It says right on page 137: "Sorcerers Rule, Wizards Drool!" So I would say RAW Sorcs win every time, though I might houserule that.

D&D 5E (2014) Any authors you think should be in Appendix E but are not?

They got Pat Rothfuss and (I think, going by memory) Joe Abercrombie the two most 'D&D influenced' recent authors who you can tell both probably DMd a really good game once upon a time. So I'm good.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for Stats

There's also the factor of the 20 cap and the regular 2 point boosts. Unless you have a character planned that NEEDs a whole bunch of feats to work or some elaborate 4 way multiclassing planned you can have a 16 in a primary stat while the guy next to you has a 20 and while the other guy will...

"And we could not be more excited." Seriously, we tried and this was what we got, sorry about that but ya know you play the cards you are dealt I guess.

D&D 5E (2014) Review of New Players Handbook Posted at Acts of Geek...

This totally, my group started out playing D&D minis and are very tactical players. BUT if you want to have more than one fight in a 4 hour session you can't be obsessing over every square of movement when the upshot of the whole thing is "Fighter swings sword, goblin dies". So what I am doing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Second Wind

Second wind can be used once per short rest. It is a self heal. Multiple concurrent short rests are just one long short rest. The numerous abilities one gets per short rest in different classes only regenerate once no mater how long the short rest is.

    D&D 5E (2014) Second Wind

Every rule in the book could be worded in a more complex, precise manner that would remove the majority of rule lawyering that goes on when there is vagueness. But then the 90% of players who are not super argumentative and wheedling for any slight advantage and use the immediate 'common sense'...

    D&D 5E (2014) Finally

A great touch, some awesome books on that list. I'm sure Pat Rothfuss and others who grew up on RPGs had a bit of a squee to see their work on there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for Stats

For the starter one player rolled his own character so I had him roll stats (4d6 drop one) for a more old school feel, of course he rolled a 17, 2 15s and a 16, lucky bugger. And at L1 those stats have more punch than they might later. Not sure what I am going to do when we re-make characters...

    D&D 5E (2014) conversion question

Hi, I have run 2e and 4e dark sun a lot and while I would like to continue to do so in 5e I think I will hold off for a bit, mostly because at this point psionics would be completely homebrew or reskinned wizard, neither of which seems very satisfying. I agree that all this will be easier with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Firing Into A Melee

I tried to off-the-cuff include friendly fire in our starter set 5e game but it was not working out well. I figured if you missed by 1 or 2 that meant it was a result of the +2 cover so there was a chance to hit the ally in melee. The problem was the monsters ac was more than 2 lower than the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Feats / Multiclassing

Both definitely. Though I will probably require some form of outside training to gain a level in a class you do not already have. I don't think dipping will be as much of a problem, especially since most classes don't get their core abilities till 3rd. Just because x rule was a problem in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Second Wind

A short rest is an hour or longer. 'Chaining' then would require a DM who wants you to be able to chain them. It is as possible to abuse short rests as it is to abuse long rests (which give you much more in return than the short ones) and it is up to the DM to curb that impulse with the usual...

D&D 5E (2014) And now for something completely useless...

I find it a little weird that the healers kit is not in with the rest of the tools. No, you don't need to be proficient to use it but if I had a choice between someone trained in first aid and someone who just fell off the turnip truck with a first aid kit looking after my sucking chest wound I...

D&D 5E (2014) How Often Are You Handing Out Inspiration?

I give out gold stars, literally. We had some foam stars from a craft store that we used for action points in 4e that are now inspiration chips.
