    5E musings

The lair section has one paragraph of description, 2-3 lair actions they get, and 3 regional special effects for each. It doesn't list their servants/minions/populations though. The Demon Lords Appendix has 2 pages for each demon lord with description (3-5 paragraphs), illustration...

    5E musings

I just bought Out of the Abyss and noticed something: The demon lords have lair actions listed, and their lairs are described as their Abyssal homes. So Demogorgon/Orcus in the Abyss are "only" CR 26 - those aren't weakened Material Plane versions. (Demogorgon as fought in the adventure is...

    The OTHER adamic dragons

Planetary Dragon is basically supposed to be King Ghidorah IIRC, three heads and gravity breath. So if you take U_K's old stats for King G... http://www.immortalshandbook.com/freestuff4.htm ... and extrapolate a dragon from that. According to page 63 of the Epic Bestiary Adamic Dragons should...

Divine ranks of various fictional entities

Their personal-scale weapons cause supernovas, so probably not below First Ones. Their whole civilization would IMO equate to Demiurge stage III or Time Lord-level power, given near-total control of that universe/multiverse. They might be low-Demiurge levels as individuals if they aren't very...

The pinnacle of hubris! I present to you Thychen, the Supreme Being

Wait what's Aravoth and why 12? IIRC Muzaloth is 8th Dimension, Kuvachim is 9th, and Akashic Library is 10th...

The pinnacle of hubris! I present to you Thychen, the Supreme Being

OK, I'm confused. What does "Stage 78" mean? A High Lord composed of 78 universes should have (200 x 78) Divine Abilities, which is 15,600. 65 universes would grant 13,000 Divine Abilities.

Enemies, Allies, and Ideas for Sidereals, Eternals, and above

IMO the Lurgese is potentially unbalanced and 'swingy'. If a fire spell gets through its spell resistance, it'll die very fast. Fireball @ 7th level - 7d6 doubled, plus 3d6/round from Flammable. That's 17d6 - average 59.5, more likely than not to instantly kill it. If anyone else hits it with...

    Lipika

Lipika Keeper of Secrets These beings are great Eternals who stepped down from Supernal status and now maintain and study in the Great Library of the Akasha. They may no longer control the omniverse, but their power is still great - at least that of a Time Lord. Upon stepping down, an Eternal...

I might try, too, just for fun. Haven't played with these rules in a while.

    5E musings

Well yeah, it's kind of a chicken and egg problem. Unlimited advancement means a need for tons of abilities, but limited page space (and maybe ideas) led to the ELH just dumping a lot of that into bonus feats and epic feats being a lot of "better class feature X". There was some really cool...

    5E musings

Definitely that's a broader, underlying issue... but what I was talking about was the more specific problem of if you're going to allow for potentially unlimited levels in limited page space, it gets spread kind of thin with 'bonus feat every X levels', class features getting relegated to Epic...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Charge Up" Mechanic: A problem for D&D

Yeah, killing monsters quick is pretty important when facing them in numbers. This isn't a bad idea in itself, but I think an impractically large amount of stuff would have to change to make it fit in D&D. The adventuring day resource model kind of runs counter to it.

    5E musings

If one were to do Epic/Divine in 5E I think sticking to the somewhat more streamlined 5E ideas is best. That doesn't mean a lack of options or powers - just that things should be fairly easy to understand and not require tons of math. On the broader design side the big question is whether to...

    Filling out the missing dinosaurs

Good point. Sounds about right. OK, thanks! I think I'll leave these two where they are now, then. And thank you for working through the math - now I understand how to use the DMG guidelines for offensive/defensive CRs.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is "Frost Brand" rarer than "Flame Tongue"?

Sword +1, Poultry Fryer. This longsword is +2 and inflicts an additional 2d6 fire damage against creatures with a natural fly speed. Any flying creature killed by this sword is fried to perfection and tastes exactly like chicken.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Strahd fear variant

I'd suggest maybe something like this Fear Checks While within Ravenloft, if the PCs are faced with an opponent stronger than themselves (CR greater than the average party level) and are aware of this, or if an opponent has successfully deceived the PCs into believing they are facing such an...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is "Frost Brand" rarer than "Flame Tongue"?

Ah, OK. Yeah, that would be cool. 2E had magic item creation rules like this. I've seen people online say that that was dumb, because nobody would make a simple item like a +1 sword if it involved quests and stuff, but I don't think that really follows. To me the whole concept of a world...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is "Frost Brand" rarer than "Flame Tongue"?

Why avian, I wonder? Are birds more vulnerable to fire than mammals or reptiles?
