One impetus for the OGL ( which wasn't originally intended to be a big O open license ) was that there are categories of support products perceived as needed for a game's health that are not profitable at the TSR/WotC/Hasbro scale. They could/would sell satisfactorily for publishers who operate...

The problem here is that brand owners frequently do not see any type of third-party license as enhancing their brand. They think their brand always does the heavy lifting. D&D made E.T.! D&D made Stranger Things! They do not seem to understand that many of these things are brand enhancers...

It's not that they forget. Too many members of C level aren't in it for the marathon, so you end up with a series of never-ending sprints as headcount rolls over and Golden parachutes deploy.

My mind remembers Worlds without Number and all coming from the period before everything was OSR when we were using the term retroclone (like 4C) and there seemed to be a lot less cranky-old gatekeeper problems with that base. Perhaps I am wrong/optimistic there. :)

That's my memory of their process. So it's more akin to aggregated movie review scores than ticket sales...

My experience is that at least as many more will go to "own" the nerds...
