    4th Edition/Pathfinder Campaign

    1. 4e style healing depends on healing surges. They're essentially a max cap on the number of times you can be healed in a day. 2. 3.x/PF saves = 4e style defenses are fine. It's mostly a matter of adding or subtracting 10 from save bonuses or DCs and having the caster/attacker roll the d20...

What is Vancian magic and does DnD have it?

If you think of casters as artillery pieces, it's fairly easy to understand how the Vancian fire-and-forget magic system became favoured when D&D emerged from its wargaming roots.

    Short Rests?

Yeah, "spending a healing surge" is probably a metagame level terminology rather than an in-game thing. I'm still not getting what the big deal is about healing and short rests. Unless the whole party is unconsciously stabilized or only have time for 1 short rest, any unconscious character...

    Short Rests?

That phrasing does not imply a conscious act. For example, for Healing Word, "The Target can spend a healing surge and...etc. ", thus spending a healing surge must be available to an unconscious person. Almost all healing powers uses the phrase "...can spend a healing surge...", so unless you...

    Short Rests?

You know, unless you only have 5 minutes to rest, you can take multiple short rests. Refresh your healing/inspiring etc. words and second winds, use them, then rest again...sure, you'd want a dying char to be at least stabilized before you officially "end the encounter" but why jump through a...

    Optimising versus Roleplaying

    Some might beg to differ.

D&D 3.x A list of 3e problems and how they were tackled in PF

I guess you made my point. Interesting fact, googling "pathfinder SRD" gave me this: Pathfinder SRD (Pathfinder_OGC) which is a different site from your PRD. There's also certain differences in the content (eg. Ray of Enfeeblement doesn't have a save in the site I googled up while it has a...

    The World Without D&D

Without D&D, there'd be no alignments threads trying to fit all fictional characters into nine little boxes.

D&D 3.x A list of 3e problems and how they were tackled in PF

I'm looking at the PF SRD and comparing it to the 3.5 SRD right now, you're right that RoE was changed from 1 min/lv to 1 round/lv but I don't think any of the others I pointed out grants a save per round that wasn't already in the original spell.

D&D 3.x A list of 3e problems and how they were tackled in PF

I still see color spray, ray of enfeeblement, dominate person, solid fog, stinking cloud, slow, sleet storm, enervation, wave of fatigue/exhaustion, confusion, forcecage (though the target's been granted a ref save) etc. Save or suck isn't limited to glitterdust and web, you know, though those...

    The World Without D&D

Bahamut would be an obscure Babylonian turtle god instead of an iconic dragon god/FF summon.

    What causes new editions?

I'd imagine that if some king was pissed off enough at the changes, he'd actually start a real war. :D

    What causes new editions?

Since we're talking about chess, let's have a wiki link History of Chess Interesting factoid: the Queen was originally much less powerful and only able to move 1 square diagonally. I bet if there were internet back in those day, ppl would be complaining that changes made to the Queen made it...

How is Old School not at least related to nostalgia?

My personal definition. "Old School" (for anything, not just RPG) is whatever was there when I first started getting into it. "New School" is everything that comes out 5/8/10 years after I started doing it.

    Storytelling vs Roleplaying

If a player exerting editorial control over the game world is not roleplaying, then I guess the player writing up a background for his character isn't roleplaying either. Coz, you know, that's editorial/narrative control in a sense too. I DM a tactical wargame tied together by story elements...

Coup de grace or not coup de grace?

I play it depending on the enemies the PCs are facing. Undeads, predatory animals and other relatively mindless things will kill you and then drag you off to be eatened. Critters with normal intelligence will tend to focus on enemies still moving. Very intelligent enemies who sees dropped PCs...

    Weak wizard - strong wizard

The problem with the list is that they all have pretty thick plot armor by being the protagonist. There's weak as in "I can't blow up a mountain / I lose against the bad guy." and then there's weak as in "I can die to a housecat." Low level D&D wizard is weak as in the second type. Simply by...

    Easy-Go Classes for Beginners?

For a "stand up to the monster and fight" PC, the Paladin is pretty easy. Just challenge a guy and start hitting. They even have lay on hands to heal themselves as a minor when they get into trouble. It's probably the easiest of the defender class to use.

PHB Book Layout - Good or No so Good

You guys read through all the powers when you first read through the PHB? Wow, I just skip them. I'd read through the first 10 lvs of powers if I was interested in that class but really...do people read through all the spells in older edition too? If anything, I like the layout of the powers...
