    Magic Items And Campaign Balance?

wrong game I personally love low-magic item but high fantasy games (Conan genre, etc.). Unfortunately, D&D is not the game for that. There are many other systems that work fine for this type of game -- from GURPS to Feng Shui to HERO ... The nature of hit points and armor class in D&D...

Swashbuckling Adventures: 7th Sea d20 review

defensive bonus? This isn't directly relevant to the current conversation, but does anyone have suggestions on assigning Defensive Bonuses to the various classes in this book (esp the prestige classes). My biggest complaint is that AEG didn't use that system (or something similar). In a...

Magic of Faerun - Blinding Spittle

Actually, the victim has to wash his eyes out with water (or something similar) -- he can't simply take an action to rub his eyes and end the spell effect. In my experience, this "balancing factor" to the spell never helps in combat -- it just means the effect isn't permanent if you survive the...

burrowing vs. object hardness & hps

Re: Re: burrowing vs. object hardness & hps How about a spellcaster summoning a Thoqqua to burrow through walls or stone doors? Or maybe an Umber Hulk trying to burrow through a castle wall?

burrowing vs. object hardness & hps

Thanks for the suggestion. That might serve as a useful guideline. Anyone else have ideas? Note that I'm using the Thoqqua simply as an example. Other creatures (such as the Umber Hulk) can also burrow through rock.

burrowing vs. object hardness & hps

Does anyone have ideas on how to adjudicate the damage that burrowing creatures do to objects? For example, the Thoqqua can burrow through rock at 20ft speed. According to DMG p.107, a 10x10ft (x5 ft thick) section of unworked stone has a hardness 8 and 900 hit points -- and the Thoqqua should...

How do you adjudicate the spells, polymorph self and polymorph other?

none of the above A "none of the above" option would be nice. I chose to completely revamp Polymorph so the above categories don't quite apply -- and, judging by what I've heard, many others have house-ruled polymorph to one degree or another as well. Just in case anyone is interested, my...

    Wow, Fiendform is broken!

I believe you're thinking of the Sage's ruling regarding Evershifting Form , the 10th level ability for Shifters. He said that a shifter should be limited to "healing" 9 times/day -- he made no mention of limitation on healing regarding any other form of polymorph or shapechange.

So I'm thinking of running Tomb of Horrors after RttTOEE

Save yourself time. Instead of running the module, simply have each player roll 1d6 -- on a one, the character lives, on anything else, he dies. Actually, those odds are better than ToH; perhaps 1 on a d20 instead.... Seriously, if your players survived RTTOEE, they may have become attached...

Archdevils and demon princes in Monte's book

Hmm, I can imagine it now -- "Orcus and a pie" :)

Anyone test Dragon Disciple in their campaign?

That's similar to what I did for the DD player in my game. I gave +1 caster level at every ODD level, dropped the bonus spells, and dropped "enlargement" (a much-argued ability, anyway). I plan to allow her to grow wings, despite her size... This has worked very well in my campaign.

Anyone test Dragon Disciple in their campaign?

Trust me -- any "real" power gamer can do much better than this class. It's easy to make a DD into a one-note character -- high strength but really nothing else. I suppose that might be very powerful in some games but, in my experience, a more well-rounded character will be much more effective...

Anyone test Dragon Disciple in their campaign?

Well, if you literally mean "stronger" then, no, I don't think there is any class that gains as much Strength as the Dragon Disciple. If you mean "powerful" then my answer is yes: almost every PrC from S&F is better for combat-oriented characters and all in T&B are better for spellcasters...

[OT] Hero System Fifth Ed Review

I have very mixed feelings about Hero, but I feel that I should bring up one point: Many of the complaints about Hero that have been mentioned are faults with GMs and players, not with the system. All too often, Champions proponents become obsessed with assigning a point value to every little...

    ECLs and DMG...difference?

IMHO, it's fairly obvious that WOTC wants to discourage playing non-standard characters. While I don't really have a problem with this, there is already a mechanism to handle that -- the DM simply says "no" to such characters. The more I play and DM 3e, the more I'm convinced that the ECL...

    Dragon Disciple: "No," says Sage

My alterations to the Dragon Disciple: Requirements: the ability to cast arcane spells of at least 3rd level without preparation. at 5th level: no Enlargement at 9th level: Wings, regardless of size I also dropped the bonus spells and instead give +1 level of spell progression at every odd...

    Dragon Disciple: "No," says Sage

Out of curiosity, have you actually seen one played? I've played a DD and I have a player running one in my current campaign. In my experience, the class is extremely weak unless you min-max the strength aspect (something like Half-Orc Sor1/Bbn5, then go DD). However, while I disagree with...

    Dragon Disciple: "No," says Sage

I fail to see the logic of disallowing all of the stat modifications listed for enlargement in the Monster Manual, but then giving 10 ft reach -- the one "benefit" of enlargement that IS NOT clearly stated in the rules. These odd rulings from the sage are what led me to drop "enlargement" from...
