D&D 3.x Playing in a DND3E game with no magic items

Your DM should try a different gamesystem --GURPS, HERO, or even RuneQuest would all work FAR better for a low-magic game. Why try to "brow-beat" D&D into something it wasn't meant for?

Thanks, guys, you've ruined Haste for the rest of us.

You're comparison is flawed. Your sample wizard can easily do 17 points of damage to 10 or more creatures -- making it 170 points vs. the fighter's 150 points. And that's assuming a sub-par spell -- at those levels he could be throwing 5th or 6th-level attack spells, rather than fireballs...

North Carolina Game Day -- THE AWESOME AFTERMATH!!!!

I'm friends with both the owners of Foundation's Edge in Raleigh and Cerebral Hobbies in Chapel Hill. Once you work out the specifics, let me know and I'll ask them about posting some announcements in their stores.

Shifter PrC (MotW) & Epic Feats

If anything, the shifter is actually one of the weaker (but still playable) PrCs...

Consolidating +2/+2 feats into one customizable feat?

I've been using this version of skill focus for some time and it has worked quite well in my games: Skill Focus: Gain +2 bonus with two related skills, or a +3 bonus with one skill, or a +4 bonus with a specific use of one skill (e.g. Combat Casting). This feat may be taken multiple times but...

Should I nix the PC's Paladin status?

Because the paladin's code as defined in the PHB is focused more on "good" than "law." Also, the archetypes the class is based on (Arthurian knight's, the character from Three Hearts and Three Lions, etc.) are more "good" than "lawful."

    Pre-reqs for Shifter?

Note that the Sage has "clarified" this in the FAQ so that the last requirement is actually more like: Special - Must either know Alter self, Polymorph Self, Shapechange or have a natural alternate form (Alter self, Polymorph Self, Shapechange, or Wild Shape ability).

    Polymorph/Cloak of the Bat question

Well, if you're like me, it's not the first house rule you've made to fix holes, oversights, and other problems in the rules :)

    Prestige Classes?

Although I have been using Prestige Classes, I decided not to allow them in the game I just started. Why? Well, PrCs HAVE become like kits in 2e. Even ignoring 3rd-party publishers, WOTC has put out far too many PrCs of questionable quality and utility. Now whenever a player makes a character...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Well, I emailed the Sage asking for clarification regarding the hit dice limit for Animal Control vs. Animal Friendship. The last time I sent him a question it took a week or so to get a response. I'll post as soon as I get a reply...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Interesting -- that's not the way I read it, however. Perhaps I should send a question to the Sage for clarification....

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Only if he is a "non-adventuring druid." As you just stated, a 4th-level druid PC would be limited to 4HD and thus unable to command animals if he already had 4 HD of animal companions...

EoM: Summoning/Conjuration. Why not Challenge Rating instead of Hit Dice?

Did you use the same numbers for the CR version of the spell list? If not, would you mind posting the numbers you did use? I only use CRs for summoning-type spells. While I won't argue that CR can be problematic, hit dice is a much worse indicator of power. There are vast disparities of power...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Animal Control says that "Animals you command through this ability count against the HD limit of animals you can befriend through animal friendship." Since most Druids will have their maximum HD of animal companions. they would be unable to even use this feat! Also, note that Animal...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Because they are lame :) Note the requirement for Animal Defiance is the ability to cast Detect Plants or Animals. That limits the ability to Rangers and Druids -- who (1) have Animal Empathy, (2) can also cast Speak with Animals and Hold Animal, and (3) will generally have very little reason...

    Elements of Magic Comments

missing spells I noticed that several spells are referenced that are not in the book. Were these cut for space? If so, might they appear in a future supplement? Some examples are Telekinesis (mentioned p.15) and Glamers/Change Self (mentioned p.20 & 84). I suspect the "missing" spell lists...

    More reasons to love Monte

Re: uhh... Actually, I already feel this way about 3E -- I don't know anyone who limits their games to just the 3 "core" books. At the very least, most everyone uses the WOTC products, and that brings in a wide variance in quality (and power/balance). I see Monte's book as potentially a...

Changing Forms (Ex, Su, and Sp)

Actually, with Polymorph, Wild Shape, or Shapechange you lose supernatural abilities when you change form. Only Alter Self allows you to keep your supernatural powers.

    Ray Coning

Ray Coning was in Dragon Annual #5, I believe. IIRC, it changes a ray into a 30 foot cone for +2 spell levels. Instead of making a ranged touch attack, the targets get a Ref save.
