D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

Sure but the devil is in the details. Do you always roll for combat and how much do your roll is the question? (the situation just mentioned was a narrated combat without more than one decision points). It does not have to be binary ON/OFF I was thinking of variable detail starting with the...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

Is that perhaps an argument in favor of the editions matter less side.

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

I am probably recalling it from Amber Diceless, and I always took it as an admonishment to A) only detail things mechanically which are interesting and B) only have decision points if they are truly going to matter (you always have one of at least goal setting).

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

I have seen the opposite of this in a sense recommended in rpgs (where this narration is in favor of the players) for expediency when it seems very likely to go that way or be tedious to play out.

D&D 5E (2014) Merlin and Arthur or Batman and zatana

It's cynical and dark where superman has lost his moral path ... yes it is wrong. I think the point was in fact how easy it could be for that to really happen and we see that failure in many many alternative superman storylines.

D&D 5E (2014) Merlin and Arthur or Batman and zatana

An irony is that there is evidence(though not conclusive) and some historians that think maybe Herakles and Odysseus were branchings from the same hero with different emphasis ( just to name a couple obvious elements both were archers and Odysseus was so strong nobody could draw his bow save...

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

And I have serious insomnia so the above post may be very much affected by lack of sleep.

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

When resolving important (not physical) conflict ie in skill challenges they are definitely supposed to have the same story impact if you do not let them do it when it is less significant that seems odd to me. .... Note when the rituals are most useful to the story ie most impactful they are...

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

I call it a party death spiral.... I had an idea of a downed character acting like an in absentee warlord proving inspirational flashbacks and similar to his allies.

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

A Quest is damn cool once at least but eventually I feel it becomes just a ritual then maybe some strange the hero has become "just that badass" and throws the affliction off.

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

Then your world is very magical or you do hijinx restricting spell levels or progression or whatever to the games magic. I have always doubled the level of Resurrection myself (I mean since 1e). I have heard it pointed out what if you didnt have wizards but instead had Eldritch Knights with...

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

In the DMG2 The benefit for a ritual that worked for a skill challenge (whether it worked was situational not a die roll) was one success exactly like if you made a successful skill check (or rarely at the most 2 successes and in the RC a skill was allowed to have 2 success if it was a crit. A...

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

I know a group that seems that fast... and they are doing full 20 levels with many homebrew elements which seem ahem borrowed heavily from WoW which seem likely to slow things down with side ventures (everyone is a crafter of some sort), LOL.

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

Definitely but for me that relates directly to PCs are NOT a direct reflection of the world they are special cases (so I am less annoyed by their being so many classes being magic, except that it feels like less attention was paid on the non-casters abilities)
