D&D 4E Advice: Running an Online 4e Game

I don't use Maptools, so I can't give specific advice about your software. It's a popular program, so I'm sure folks will be coming around shortly who can answer specific questions about it. I play using d20 Pro for my VTT and Ventrillo or Skype (depending on how many players I have that night...

Siege of Augusta in Full Gear! Jan 21-23 2011

In the past, I've been under the impression that the Siege of Augusta is mostly an event for historical wargamers, and I don't see a whole lot of RPG's in your events listing. How much will y'all have in the way of RPG's as opposed to minis/wargames?

The whimsical element of D&D vs AD&D

After they defeated the sex golems, the PC's went on to fight a haunted bedroom full of tentacle monsters. Alas for me, none of them fell prey to the Haunted Bed of Sleepyness (tentacle monsters get a bonus to hit sleeping PC's). Then they killed a bunch of dinosaurs and burned down a building...

Yay!!! Gamma World in Dungeon! :)

I like the how to nature of this article. It isn't just an infodump about a location you may or may not use. That's something I haven't seen in Dungeon or Dragon for awhile. Even though this is a GammaWorld article, many of the tables could be used for any game. I think that's a nice touch too.

The whimsical element of D&D vs AD&D

No whips and chains, just a rechargeable kiss that did electrical damage and dazed (save ends, first failed save, target is stunned).

The whimsical element of D&D vs AD&D

Last week my PC's fought sex golems in a dead wizard's pleasure palace while experimental noise music blared in the background (causing sonic damage to all). Is that whimsical?

Dungeon 185 - Bark at the Moon: Dungeons biggest adventure

The actual adventure looks pretty good and seems to address some of the issues that folks in the community have been raising about WotC's adventure writing. There are multiple friendly NPC's, with the expectation that the PC's will be doing a fair amount of talking, investigating and role...

Dungeon 185 - Bark at the Moon: Dungeons biggest adventure

I'm in a situation similar to Aegeri, I run my games on a VTT. As a result, I can use a WotC map in my game without printing it. Good looking maps are a resource that I can use in my game. I'd also say that having good maps is more important to my online game than when I played face-to-face...

Dungeon 185 - Bark at the Moon: Dungeons biggest adventure

I concur with the OP. I don't like WotC's focus on using Dungeon Tiles in its adventures. I understand it. I don't like it. 1. I miss having a large-scale area map. I want to have a clear picture of how the various encounter areas fit together, and I want to be able to react when the...

    Gunpowder, fantasy and you

Speaking for myself, I want firearms in D&D and I want them to be treated differently from bows. However, it seems that in many cases "treating firearms differently" translates to "making firearms an unplayable PITA." If using a firearm requires accepting multi-round load times, frequent...

    My campaign primer

An interesting campaign setting that's familiar enough to be attractive to me, but different enough to be a change of pace. I tend to like games set in civilized empires, to that appeals to me. If I were a player, I'd want to know a little more about the immediate area where the campaign...

    It's Just a Cow!

Long ago, my PC's were busting a ruined castle full of Gnolls. In one room, they found a black gem buried in some rubble. I described it as glittering or glimmering or twinkling or somesuch. For some damn reason, they got it in their heads that it was a magic, glowing gem. They kept it for...

Hi, I'm Stoat. * I got my screen name because the IT people in college wouldn't let me be "Weasel". Thanks IT people! * I love tinker gnomes, but do not care at all for Dragonlance. * I have to resist the temptation to throw robots and lasers into ever game I DM. * I'm a terrible...

Start a campaign with a virtual table now, or wait?

As always, everybody else is right. Go ahead and get started. In my experience, you can figure out the basics of using a new VTT with a few hours of tinkering. (It took me probably 10 hours to get comfortable with Klooge and maybe 5 or 6 to get comfortable with D20 Pro after that). If you...

    Magazine Survey from WotC

Things were more fun two weeks ago when everybody was a programmer. Or a few months back when everybody was a lawyer. But in two or three weeks, everybody will be a CEO, and that might lead to some entertaining discussion.

    Tropes that need to die

I'd certainly say that few campaign settings published by TSR or WotC look much like any historical period I'm familiar with. Maybe some of those greenbacked splatbooks TSR did in the 90's, but that's about it. I'd say that settings like Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms take a "Ren Faire"...

    DDI VT Beta thread

I've had to cancel several games in the last year when I was traveling and couldn't host my regular game because of hotel firewalls (d20 Pro requires me to forward a port to allow my players access to the game, and no hotel will let me do that). Would I have the same problem with WotC's VTT?
